About Sealy Hambright, Ph.D.

I chose to study the biology of aging because it is principal driver of several diseases which collectively represent a significant healthcare burden. My PhD training in the Biology of Aging Training Program at UTHealth San Antonio under Qitao Ran was focused on the redox biology of age associated neurodegenerative diseases. We were the first to identify ferroptosis as a novel mechanism responsible for degeneration of neurons primarily afflicted during ALS and Alzheimer's disease. My work elucidating these mechanisms in different neuronal populations has garnered over 1200 citations from 2 different manuscripts. As a Principal Investigator at SPRI, we developed strategies that target fundamental properties of aging like senescent cell accumulation, telomere erosion, & inflammation to improve regenerative medicine therapies. I have translated these experiences into new ventures with the overarching goal to provide a combinatorial treatment approach targeting aging processes and conditions to improve and restore active living with age.

    At UTHSCSA, I worked in the laboratory of Qitao Ran PhD. The goal of my project was to characterize the role of Gpx4 and lipid peroxidation stress in neurodegeneration and cognitive decline. While in the Ran lab I generated a novel mouse model whereby I could conditionally induce Gpx4 ablation in forebrain neurons in vivo. Following Gpx4 loss these mice exhibit neurodegeneration and cognitive decline. My findings have been published in JBC and Redox Biology among others. While in the the Ran lab, I became proficient in the design, generation, and implementation of in vivo mouse model systems. This involved carrying out breeding, behavior tasks, tissue collection, tissue sectioning, and histological imaging with brightfield and confocal microscopes.
