Climate is only half the story - protecting and reducing our impact on nature is just as important. Along with my co-founder, we spent 3 months full-time exploring, testing, and building ideas in the corporate nature impact assessment space. We spoke to hundreds of sustainability teams and consultants to understand what made corporate nature assessments difficult, and what we could do to help them. I led the customer development and user requirements scoping, resulting in an MVP being built. As we prepared to raise a pre-seed round, it became clear to me that the market was still too nascent to provide a substantial opportunity for a for-profit business model of our MVP. With limited runway at our disposal, we decided to move the project to a part time commitment, resulting in Akacia, a free, open, and easy to use public repository of environmental datasets, tools, companies and frameworks.

All of these ideation paths involved applying technology (AI, satellite imagery, data analysis) to provide gains to people working in these areas. I learned the importance of lean development, customer development and fast iterations.

Studied within the AI for Environmental Risk CDT at Cambridge (fully-funded). My research focused on using satellite imagery, GIS datasets and AI to predict carbon stocks within peatland ecosystems. I worked closely with the Centre for Landscape Restoration (CLR) and the Cambridge Centre for Carbon Credits (4C) during this time. I decided to leave the PhD program for a couple of reasons. I had a continued desire to engage with industry and understand both the net-zero and nature-positive challenges posed to businesses. Through the Cambridge Zero Climate Challenge competition and the EnterpriseTech course I had also realised a passion for entrepreneurship. From my previous degree in engineering, it was also clear to me that I enjoyed working in multidisciplinary teams rather than as an individual. I was selected to be a part of the Entrepreneur First program in March, which provided an excellent opportunity to fulfil all of these goals.

Completed 6 months of technical work within a small team environment during the 2020 season. The placement involved working on projects involving both software and hardware components, in order to make improvements to the W11 Formula One car.The placement was both incredibly enjoyable and challenging. The fast-paced technical work resulted in a steep learning curve, and the Covid-19 pandemic required me to move to a new location under high uncertainty. Although I greatly enjoyed working in F1, I decided to follow my passion for sustainability by studying further through a Master's course.

Completed a 'Year in Industry' placement before University where I built a prototype RADAR to be used in STEM awareness activities during school/university visits by the company.The first 6 months of the placement were focused on R&D, resulting in the development of a low-cost RADAR system that could be easily transported and safely used. The final 6 months were focused on developing a comprehensive educational activity that employees could use for STEM outreach. To test the activity, I presented to multiple school groups and conducted surveys to get feedback.
