About Hamish Mcwilliam

I use cell biology, biochemistry, gene editing and immunology to unravel molecular mechanisms of the immune system. We use very cool techniques such as CRISPR/Cas9 genome wide screens that help us to identify gene products that govern immune processes.I started working in vet parasitology for my PhD and prior then over to molecular immunology in human/mouse systems for my postdoc. Now I’m 9 years post-PhD, and I’m fortunate to have gained my own funding and run my own research group within a larger lab (Jose Villadangos’ lab). The best part of my job is working with my team and make discoveries: finding the molecular events that determine how our cells recognize foreign threats to generate immunity.

    I competed my PhD in 2013 on vaccine development against the parasitic disease, schistosomiasis. Using a novel technique I investigated the local immune response against the parasite larvae as they migrate through the host, and used this to identify novel vaccine candidates.Part of my experimental work was conducted in Brisbane (QIMR) and also in China (Hunan Province).I have since characterised the leading vaccine candidate, optimised the adjuvant formulation and initiated vaccine testing with this molecule.
