    For my post-doc research I was contracted by the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations to coordinate a global workshop series called Sea Cucumber fisheries: An Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management (SCEAM). At the workshop I facilitated interactive sessions and mentored fisheries managers from 15 countries through tailored improvements to their national fishery management plans. Through the workshop format I studied elements of governance and management of these commodity fisheries that serve the Chinese dried seafood market.

    Management and governance of natural resources and pollution in the anthropocene world requires new thinking and appropriate institutions. I use a fishery where local African reefs are the source for marine products serving the global dried seafood market as a case to review management paradigms and misfits of institutions. For my PhD I conducted research the Western Indian Ocean, on the Great Barrier Reef and in the South Pacific. The work was done in collaboration with The Secretariat of the Pacific Community, Université de la Reunion, IMS Zanzibar, Stockholm Resilience Centrer and Sydney University.
