I am a non-bot, human interpreter who helps clients, and non-client parties alike, feel engaged and influential in an environment of alien language and culture. My high proficiency in Mandarin Chinese and English may be the first thing most clients notice, yet the more discerning eyes and ears go on to appreciate my grasp of the dynamics in a wide array of communication settings. Often mistaken for an in-house interpreter, I make it seem easy to talk the insider talk and sync myself right into a team. Solid in both modes of interpreting, consecutive and simultaneous, I flow with the needs of the hour, as lighting, mood and discussion mode shifts. Pro tip: explicitly check your potiential hire’s specific skillsets. Consecutive interpreting, a dying art as some suspects, is priceless when you need it. It has never been a natural byproduct of simultaneous interpreting. A good consecutive interpreter like myself enhances the flow of communication, keeps everyone engaged and sets a comfortable pace for the exchange of ideas. Getting ideas across language and cultural barriers is my passion. This passion lends me a laser sharp focus on the ideas being presented instead of the wealth and power behind the persons that can rattle a less steady mind into under-performing. I respect the people I work for and work with, but I stand equal to them without feeling inferior to them. My experience of growing up with the Ningbo dialect, of having lived in diverse dialect zones within China, of adding conversational German to my language portfolio in my early thirties, and of traveling extensively, has kept me sympathetic to the powerlessness and loneliness that can strike individuals in a full room. It also feeds my hungry analytical mind with endless interesting questions that challenge lazy assumptions. All this is critical to my staying an open-minded and attentive listener in the heat of conference interpreting work, in all those split-second decisions about "What do you really mean?"
