When we first came up with the idea it was to help, in whatever small way we could, to reduce the spread of HAI’s (Hospital acquired infections) amongst patients in hospitals, as a result of my father contracting MRSA in hospital.We haven’t solved the overall problem, but we have addressed one important link in the “Contamination Chain”, door handles, and primarily washroom door handles, because not everybody washes their hands after using the toiletWhen we first developed the idea, we had to substantiate our claims, because we were dealing with something that was invisible, germs, and how do you show it works, so we went to Trinity College, Dublin, one of the world’s most renowned universities to ask for their help. We met with their Senior Lecturer in Micro-Biology, a Dr. Ronnie Russell, who took a big shine to the whole project, he said we were “ addressing what was up to now, an un-addressed problem” door handles and their role in the spread of contamination. The system is easily installed to existing doors, it is low maintenance and uses easily replaced “single-use cartridges” which are good for approximately 5,000 cycles.
