Project: Mode of action and signal transduction pathways of different steroids and steroid modulators (Tibolone, Tamoxifen, Estrogen and Progesterone). This study was conducted in endometrial cell lines and endometrial tissues collected from clinical trial. Responsibilities included setting up an endometrial tumor bank and database. Collaboration with Organon NV (now part of Schering-Plough Corporation) who sponsored the study; experimental design, experimental work, data analysis and interpretation of scientific results; clinical trial management (contact with clinicians, monitoring patient selection and recruitment, tissue collection and archiving). Project: Identification and characterization of susceptibility genes for Familiar Combined Hyperlipidemia (FHC) using whole genome scan and linkage analysis. In addition, I worked on identification of dietary response genes in hyperlipidemic mouse models using gene expression profiling; I developed a set of molecular beacons for high throughput genotyping of APOE and finally, I was responsible for the design and production of in-house cDNA mouse microarray. Responsibilities included design and evaluation of relevant high-throughput assays, supervising cDNA array working group, coaching lab technicians and master students.

Project: Application of microsatellites as additional genetic tools in the genetic study of the MHC. This question was addressed in three different areas; namely, characterization of MHC region in the Dutch reference population; fine mapping of the MHC susceptibility regions in type I diabetes; donor-recipient matching aspects in bone marrow transplantation and finally, in the quantitative variation of the immune response. Responsibilities included the setting up of a microsatellites screening platform in the department; teaching HLA oligo typing to visiting scientists during international summer workshops; supervising lab technicians, master students and visiting scientists.
