Served as the final editor for half of the stories that ran in each weekly issue, with responsibility for the readability, accuracy and fairness of pieces ranging from short, front-of-book items to 10,000-word take-outs to months-long investigations. Wrote cover billings and most of the magazine display copy. • Was one of two SI edit staffers on a six-person task force that guided the integration of the magazine with the website, SI.com. • Managed 15 senior editors and was office point person for the far-flung staff of 30 writers, handling their T&E budgets. Worked closely with photo and art departments to ensure quality design. • For more than 30 issues functioned as SI’s managing editor, leading the edit meetings, choosing the lineup of stories, coordinating the mockup, picking all photos, approving layouts and overseeing the cover design, while also performing my weekly AME duties.

Took charge of the magazine’s NBA and soccer beats, conceiving stories each week, working them through with writers and photographers, and then editing the copy. Planned 100-page preview issues for the NBA and handled World Cup coverage on site. • Leader on a variety of projects, including special and thematic issues, intra-office mentoring, teleconferencing with writers and revision of the stylebook. • Closed the longstanding gap between writers and editors by ensuring that writers were able to see their stories before they were published.

Covered everything from women’s gymnastics to the World Series to a controversy over race in a small, football-mad South Carolina town. Had more than 400 bylines, including six cover stories and an award-winning feature on the NBA playoffs. • Served as both writer and editor at the 1995 founding of Sports Illustrated Presents, a highly successful spinoff of SI that put out previews, championship commemoratives and special issues, some sponsor-driven. • Became SI’s lead soccer writer despite never having covered the sport before.

Designed four one-semester courses for the journalism and English departments that provided instruction not only in sportswriting but also in developing the writer’s voice. • Assigned writing every week—game coverage, profiles, columns or takeouts— and did close edits to guide the students, then allowed them to rewrite to better understand tight, clean writing. • Classes often featured guest speakers, from Sports Illustrated staffers to website columnists to the commissioner of Major League Soccer.
