About Hannah Ayres

I am currently a PhD candidate in Sociology at the University of Warwick. I am supervised by Dr Cath Lambert and Dr Laura Schwartz. I was formerly supervised by Dr Meleisa Ono-George.History permeates people's everyday lives in several ways. One of the most powerful is through public historical re/presentation in public-facing institutions such as museums. Museums, which are often publicly funded, have a large impact on what history gets remembered and internalised in the public consciousness. My research project aims to investigate queer historical re/presentation in museums in the UK. I also want to understand the ways in which queer individuals and communities create, react to and possibly internalise these re/presentations.Interests: Public history; community history; queer history; LGBTQ+ communities; memory studies; queer theory; visual sociology; gender and sexuality.

As a study skills mentor, I met up to four mentees a week and offered peer to peer academic support. I helped students excel in their studies, raise their academic standards and reach their full potential, especially in the uncertain first year of University. I taught key skills such as referencing; how to structure and write the different kinds of assignments; how to give presentations; exam and revision tips and how to receive and develop on feedback given by the lecturers. These are just some examples of what SMART Buddies offered as each student requires a different kind of academic support depending on what course they do and what they already feel confident doing. To help provide this support, I was given training throughout the year from the Study Skills team at the University of Winchester.
