Senior Research Fellow Theme Lead for the De-cluttering for Safety research theme at the NIHR funded YHPSRC (Yorkshire and Humber Patient Safety Research Collaboration)In this role I led a team of researchers and a portfolio of projects to de-implement low value safety practices, including the development of a framework to rationalise the use of excessive digital alerts and prompts for healthcare professionals, developing a digital intervention to support GPs in safety netting patients with ambiguous symptoms, developing an intervention to replace the current practice of double checking of medicines at administration, developing an intervention to support the de-prescribing of unnecessary medicines for older people. I am also co-applicant on numerous bids to generate further research and capacity within the theme. All of the above research is person centred and takes a co-design approach in understanding the experiences and needs of patients and healthcare professionals to inform the development of interventions that meet their needs and achieve key patient safety outcomes. I also collaborate with key national stakeholders across NHS related organisations to ensure our research impacts policy and practice and frequently present to senior stakeholders e.g., local Trust executive teams and boards, national workforce groups, patient safety specialists. I am also supervising two PhD students involving the analysis of big data and systematic reviews.

I led a cross site research project exploring nurses and managers experiences of redeployment during Covid-19 and its impact on nurse well-being, job performance and retention, with a view to developing redeployment guidance. I managed the team and research activities across all sites, involving various problem solving in response to carrying out research in the NHS during the Covid-19 pandemic. I analysed qualitative data and led a national stakeholder consultation event with senior stakeholders from the following organisations: Health Education England; Nursing and Midwifery Council; Royal College of Nursing; Unison; NHS Employers; NHS England and Improvement; NHS Providers; Improvement Academy; Care Opinion (patient perspective). From the findings of the study and through collaboration with key national stakeholders I led the development of and authored two key national outputs: 1. ‘Recommendations for the management of NHS nurse redeployment and crisis workforce recovery report’ for organisational leaders and policy stakeholders to bring about change that is supported at a systems and organisational level; 2. ‘Nurse redeployment: A good practice guide’ for senior leaders, middle managers and nurses that are involved in redeployment, provides operational guidance to support the delivery of the high-level recommendations on the ground. These outputs are endorsed by and hosted on NHS Employers.I was also the lead author for NIHR end of study synopsis and have led and co-authored additional academic publications and presented the findings to various senior stakeholder groups such as NHS exec teams, and national workforce groups.

I worked as the research associate on the HighCALS NIHR programme: A programme to develop and evaluate a digital complex intervention to achieve a high calorie diet for people with motor neurone disease. This was a collaborative team where I applied my speciality knowledge of psychology and health services research to rigorously develop a complex digital intervention in a multi disciplinary team. I was the lead collaborator with the web design team to ensure the intervention was accurately developed on the digital platform, this involved constant trouble shooting. I also supported the piloting and acceptability and feasibility testing of the intervention before it went to trial across the UK. This involved quantitative data collection and analysis for example using google analytics to monitor use of and engagement in the intervention materials; and qualitative data collection and analysis to evaluate user experience. I also supported the training of healthcare professionals who delivered the intervention to patients

Research project: Care Homes Independent Pharmacist Prescribing Study (CHIPPS)Key Responsibilities:This is a 5-year, NIHR-funded research programme investigating appropriate medicine management in care homes, through the use of a Pharmacist Independent Prescriber. I have contributed to the data collection for the randomised control trial package of the programme. I have independently visited multiples care homes across Yorkshire and the Humber to collect quantitative data, including data around patient safety. This has involved liaising with care home staff and building professional relationships; conducting questionnaires with staff; navigating care plans to extract relevant data; using digital platforms to access and extract relevant data; and accessing and reading medical records to extract data. I have carried out this role alongside carrying out my own PhD research

Within this qualitative research role I have conducted multiple semi structured face to face and telephone interviews and transcribed the interview recordings. This project is gaining the thoughts and opinions of Public and Patient Involvement (PPI) members, therefore the ability to quickly build a rapport over the telephone was fundamental, in order to facilitate the interview.This post has provided me with further interview experience thus improving my interview skills and facilitating my verbatim transcription skills. I will also aid the analysis of these interviews which will build upon my qualitative analysis competency.

Within this qualitative research role I was responsible for recruiting participants, liaising with healthcare professionals in order to organise participant involvement, scheduling interviews, conducting semi structured face to face and telephone interviews with participants, and feeding back to the research team. It was imperative that I built a rapport with participants, as the nature of the interview was to gain their honest thoughts and opinions towards a provision, which would then be used to improve said provision.This position gave me experience of the logistic of conducting research in the real world, communicating with senior professionals and improved my ability to conduct semi structured interviews.

This course provided me with extensive knowledge and experience of quantitative and qualitative research and analysis, as described above, within many different areas of health psychology. The research driven nature of this course has developed my critical thought process and encouraged my consideration of multiple research techniques that can be applied to research questions by evaluating the best way to yield the most appropriate data. Furthermore, it has given me the opportunity to not only conduct the research and develop my research skills, but has also highlighted to me the importance of the dissemination of results. The research finds the statistical results, but these must be explained in real terms to the relevant audience. I am now much more aware of the audience the results of research projects should be aimed towards, the amendment of the style of writing or language used in a presentation depending on the audience, the importance of the communication of the results' real world applications and implications, and how these should be presented to their target audience. My dissertation was a qualitative research project: "The weight management needs of women in the antenatal and postnatal period: An exploratory study”. I proposed and developed this dissertation project from a gap in the literature that my own literature review of the area identified. I completed the ethics application and attended the ethics board meeting for this research so am therefore fully aware of the process in order to gain ethical approval for research. I recruited participants through multiple mediums, i.e. online, pregnancy related classes etc, created and developed the interview topic guide, conducted semi structured telephone interviews, transcribed the interviews, completed thematic analysis on the interview data, fed back to my research team; taking on suggestions and amending accordingly and wrote up the report in an academic format to publication level.
