Spokane, WA, reportedly faces a youth homelessness rate that is approximately 30% higher than the state average. This three-year project - through Volunteers of America: Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho, Spokane County United Way, and AmeriCorps VISTA service - is primarily focused on determining what is being done well and what still needs improvement in our community efforts to address and prevent youth homelessness. Some of my responsibilities include: - Coordinating a community needs assessment on issues of youth homelessness. - Designing/conducting interviews and surveys with homeless youth, service providers, and other community stakeholders. - Leading research efforts on local, state, federal, and international approaches to homelessness. - Identifying gaps in services and barriers youth experience in accessing services. - Creating a detailed, strategic plan for addressing and preventing youth homelessness by recommending changes in services, policies, etc. - Presenting conclusions and research-based suggestions to local government officials, service providers/nonprofits, and others involved in issues of youth homelessness. - Building capacity and fostering better collaboration among service providers. - Collaborating with HUD, HMIS, and other groups to improve countywide data collection processes regarding homeless youth. - Assisting with the development of a comprehensive resource map (via cell phone application) of services available for homeless youth. - Drafting summary reports of data collected and analyzed.

The Transitional (TLP) and Independent Living Programs (ILP) at Mountain Comprehensive Care were developed to assist homeless and/or "aged-out" foster youth ages 18-22. As the case manager for both of these programs, some of my responsibilities included but were not limited to: - Coordinating life skills, cultural, volunteer, and recreational activities. - Assisting clients with employment, education, housing, and other goals. - Providing transportation for clients (e.g. grocery shopping, errands, job interviews). - Performing routine inspections of facilities and instructing clients in safety drills. - Writing daily documentation reports on each client. - Drafting monthly budget reports for Independent Living Program youth. - Training (over 150 hours logged) in mental health care, counseling techniques, de-escalation strategies, emergency/crisis response, first-aid/CPR, special populations, etc. - Provided emotional support for program youth and responded to crises, as needed. - Connecting our program(s) to other agencies and services in the community/across the state through research and relationship-building.
