While volunteering at Shelter I rotated through a number of roles to suit the demand of the job. These responsibilities included steaming clothes and preparing them for sale as well as organising donations from the public. I was trusted to work on the till which involved cash handling and helping customers if in need. During staff shortages I have individually run the shop which at the end of the day included taking X reports, storing money in the safe and locking up the shop.

My duties as a play assistant included entertaining and playing with children during their stay at the hospital. This included just talking to them if they were worried or getting them involved in arts and crafts activities to keep them active and happy. The most important role I played was to ensure parents could have breaks from their child's bedside while reassuring them they were in safe hands. This role involved communication skills with a wide range of age groups including teenagers as well as babies.

During my time at Christies I shadowed a oncology consultant during weekly clinics and during consultations when patients allowed. I witnessed the fast paced work environment of a hospital and the paperwork required to fill out and read before and after each patient. I also shadowed nurses of the radiology department and learnt the skills of dealing with patients at a difficult time and calming and reassuring them before treatment.
