Ensuring the smooth running of the project by training volunteers, keeping up team morale and ensuring everybody is safe and healthy. Conservation duties included collecting scientific data, protecting nests, relocating nests. Public outreach was also a large part of the conservation efforts of the project. As a field leader, I participate in and train volunteers to do the following work. Monitoring nesting activity through morning and night surveys. Obtaining biometric data regarding nesting females and placing metal flipper and pit tags. Excavating nests in order to estimate hatching success and to find possible causes of the hatch rates. Whilst on the beaches we also collect data regarding the threat’s and implement protection measures. I was stranding officer, taking any data on stranded turtles and conducting sea turtle first-aid. I spent 9 weeks volunteering at the Archelon Sea Turtle Rescue Centre in Athens, Greece. Duties including general care for the turtles such as daily cleaning and feeding along with daily medical treatments such as administering injections, giving IV drips, treating any wounds and tube feeding. Along side this, behavioural observations, inputting data regarding the turtles and public education was also part of the role.
