In my role as a Support Worker at Sense, I provided essential care and support to adults with learning disabilities at the day centre and in the community. I worked closely with individuals to enhance their daily living skills and foster a sense of independence. I created individualised care plans to meet the unique needs of each individual at the day service, ensuring holistic approach to their well-being. I also ran groups for individuals transitioning from school into the adult services. I set up various sensory activities to meet a range of needs. I went to individual’s houses, both independently and with a team leader, to complete initial assessments and determine whether individuals would be suitable to attend the service and whether we were able to meet their needs.

I worked for a family supporting their daughter with a range of complex needs, at home and in the community. The young woman required full support with all activities of daily living, including personal care and PEG feeding. Activities were person-centred and chosen on a weekly basis. These included, going in lifts, using public transport, going to cafes, arts and craft, dancing, singing and listening to music.

Alongside completing my undergraduate degree, I supported adults and children with physical disabilities and mental health issues in the community on a 1:1 basis. I provided personalised care, support with daily activities and emotional support to enhance their well-being and independence.
WBC is a summer camp for adults and children with developmental disabilities, located in Prairie du Chein, Wisconsin. The camp week ran from Sunday afternoon until Friday morning. During that period, counsellors were responsible for providing care and support to campers throughout the day and night. We supported campers to engage in activities, such as swimming, camping, fishing, arts and craft, talent show, olympics etc. no matter their ability. All activities were graded and adapted based on the campers needs. We created names tags for the campers beds based off the weekly theme. Another counsellor and I supported two groups of campers on travel camp. Each week we would drive the mini bus to a new location. We travelled to Des Moines, Iowa and Kansas City, Missouri. Some of the activities included going to a living history farm, Legoland and Kansas City Zoo. The counsellor and I would prepare packed lunches for the campers and cook dinner in the evening. Travel campers were more independent, needing little assistance in most of their activities of daily living and personal care.
