I present the art of the English language to high school students, specifically freshmen, on a daily basis. I must think quickly and make timely decisions on how to keep students engaged, challenged, and focused on personal growth. I help students hone their grammatical skills as well as encourage them to think critically about the literature they encounter within my class along with the literature of the world around them.

Peers within my university request appointments with me, in which I advise them on writing assignments or questions ranging a variety of subject matters. I give editorial suggestions, brainstorm, and explain any writing matter that is requested by the student. Appointments last anywhere from 15 minutes to over an hour.

Within this residential facility, I encourage children ages 9-17 to take their mental health seriously in a controlled and safe environment. I watched over the facility in overnight shifts, and in the morning would wake the residents and get them ready for the day. Mornings would consist of breakfast, hygiene routines, and medicine passing before sending them to their on-campus school. I also ensured healthy discussions of mental health and life in general through interactions with the residents.

Throughout these months I filled any role that was needed: nursery work, music leadership, Sunday School teaching, and event planning and set-up. I was “on call” every Sunday, as this role was characterized by simply being available at a moment’s notice.

Throughout the summer MINK League baseball season, I encouraged crowd interaction and enthusiasm. My role consisted of leading cheers and dances, occasionally singing the National Anthem, announcing raffle winners, and finding children to volunteer for between-inning games.

Traveling across the state, I would set up and run mobile church camps at church facilities for children that could not go to overnight summer camps. I was one of four leaders, and my role consisted of training adults to be counselors, leading music with the children, ensuring safety on camp equipment, delegating roles to church members, and simply being present for anything that was needed from the church or campers.
