I am passionate about addressing the root causes of food insecurity and health disparities, and advocating for systemic and sustainable solutions.As a Food Access Director at Sustainable Food Center, I lead a team of 12 dedicated professionals who work to improve the availability, affordability, and quality of healthy food for communities facing systemic barriers to food security and health. I have 10 years of experience in program management and evaluation, grant writing, and community engagement in the fields of nutrition and food security. The Texas State University Dietetic Internship is a graduate-level, ACEND accredited program that includes over 1200 hours of supervised practice and three graduate courses, resulting in a total of 18 hours of graduate credit. Program concentrations include pediatric nutrition and food security. Program graduates are qualified to take the Registration Examination for Dietitians administered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR), and those interested in a master's degree can combine the dietetic internship with the master of science in human nutrition at Texas State. Child Nutrition and Food Security Program ConcentrationsThese two program concentrations inform all internship experiences, from supervised practice to graduate courses. In order to gain proficiency with the pediatric population, each intern completes a three-week clinical rotation focused on pediatrics. Rotation sites include Dell Children's Medical Center, the NICU at St. David's Medical Center, Austin's First Steps high risk follow up clinic, and Mom's Place lactation support center. Additional pediatric outpatient counseling rotations are completed through the Dell Children's 'Specially for Children clinics and CommUnityCare Health Centers. All interns gain experience with maternal and child health through rotations at WIC clinics, the State of Texas DHHS WIC program, and the Mothers' Milk Bank of Austin. Interns who are particularly interested in working with the pediatric population can choose specialty rotations focused on eating disorders or community nutrition/youth development.Interns gain experience working with both food insecure individuals and populations. While most rotations address food security, specific competencies related to food security assessment and food banking are achieved through rotations at the San Antonio Food Bank, the Central Texas Food Bank, and with the Texas State Food Security Learning Community.

In all of my classes, I focus on active learning, utilizing case studies, dyad/triad discussion, and team/group work.
