About Hannah Mack

Hannah Mack is a scientist and engineer based in Southern California. Recently graduated with her masters in Bioengineering from UC San Diego, Hannah is seeking opportunities in the bio/product development space with culture forward organizations dedicated to improving the lives of humans. In her thesis work, Hannah helped to develop and optimize a platform capable of rapidly identifying organisms through a nucleic acid de-hybridization technique. The platform has the potential to identify sepsis-causing bacteria at a clinically relevant load for neonatal sepsis within four hours through an integrated system which incorporates universal PCR amplification, High Resolution Melt across a 20,000 well microfluidic chip and a machine learning algorithm for automated identification.Hannah’s B.S. degree was in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Dayton. After graduation, Hannah participated in a year long rotational program at Prosthetic Design Inc., where she experimented with carbon fiber and plastics manufacturing, 3D printing, learned computer modeling in 3D with Inventor and AutoCAD, plus spent time in the accounting and technical sales departments. She also gained valuable experience working hands-on with patients at Dayton Artificial Limb Clinic.Hannah’s passion for helping others runs deep and has been fueled by her own personal experiences in life. None more so than the loss of her mother to vulvar cancer in 2012. It was through this experience that she decided to make it her life’s mission to do everything she could to help people live healthier, longer lives. Outside of the professional sphere, Hannah is keen on giving back to the local community and is currently partnering with Habitat for Humanity to fundraise and help build houses for individuals in the San Diego area.Hannah is keen to speak with other individuals and organizations working on life changing projects.

Graduate Student Researcher

La Jolla, California

I worked with a team to develop a point-of-care device, which can identify bacteria in blood within a few hours. I conducted molecular biology experiments with bloodborne pathogens in a BSL2+ lab environment. Some of these experiments included DNA/RNA purification, PCR (dPCR and qPCR), gel electrophoresis, and fluorescent imaging for High Resolution Melt (HRM). I designed and 3D printed the microscope adapter and case for the device. I also performed data analysis utilizing and improving our team's MATLAB software. In addition, I implemented and optimized a feedback controller for the heating component of the device. I also maintained a leadership role in which I trained and motivated new researchers in the lab.
