Where are we, where do we need to go, and how do we get there? Seeing the big picture, understanding the correct end goal, and figuring out how to achieve it are things I love. Studying philosophy in undergrad I got to investigate big picture ideas and the arguments which got you to them. As a software tester in Epic’s Quality Assurance division (there aren’t a lot of philosophy jobs out there) I could use my critical thinking to analyze the big picture reviewing designs and doing test plan review. But I didn’t really get to lean into those skills, or my ability to plan, organize and communicate, until Git.Transitioning Epic’s source control system from SVN to Git was a huge, multi-year project that is critical to the work of the 3000+ developers at Epic as well as our ability to provide high quality software used by millions of providers and patients in health systems across the world. As my team developed code, we knew the big picture - cut over from SVN to Git. But once the code was done, how exactly was that going to happen? The steps necessary to cut over changed as our development changed, making the pieces of the picture murky and shifting. That’s where I came in, as the owner of the technical implementation steps.I collaborated with coworkers to identify necessary steps, their dependencies, their order, their owners and backups, and their timelines. I researched and selected a system which would meet our goals for tracking the 500+ steps, and built them out to provide visibility into who was doing what, when. Figuring out the puzzle and putting the pieces together was challenging but also a lot of fun. Additionally, I planned and coordinated end-user testing events for 100 and 250 developers and a technical dry run as part of the role, which involved strategy, planning, organization and communication. I’ve been able to dig into my strengths, develop them further, and deliver what’s needed. As my team’s product lead told me, “When you say something will be done, I know it will be done.” Now Epic is live on Git after a smooth and successful go-live, and I’m looking for my next challenge. I know there are lots of roles where I could make an impact as an analytical, critical thinker who loves to figure out the big picture, determine what will make it happen, and put all the pieces together to drive something forward.
