About Hannah Choi

I am a multi/interdisciplinary researcher with significant experience in cognitive neuroscience and music engineering. Having been a cellist since the age of 7, I have cultivated great interest in how humans hear and perceive the auditory world around them. All things waves, whether in the form of sound waves or brain waves, are of primary interest. My recent projects have focused on employing multimodal neuroimaging and behavioral methods to investigate human sensory processing. Staff Research Associate Ii, Department Of Radiology And Biomedical Imaging

San Francisco Bay Area

UCSF Neural Connectivity Lab (PI: Pratik Mukherjee)Neurodevelopmental disorders: sensory processing disorder (SPD), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)• Utilized resting state fMRI to examine the brain networks, lobes, and regions of children with sensory over-responsivity. • Examined structural MRI (sMRI) metrics of gray matter cortical thickness, surface area, and volume alongside diffusion MRI (dMRI) metrics of white matter tracts produced from diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and neurite orientation dispersion and density imaging (NODDI).• Employed long and short-range functional connectivity metrics (dual regression, fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (fALFF), regional homogeneity (ReHo)), behavior and emotion assessment measures, and analytical techniques (permutation-based voxel-wise analysis, seed-based connectivity analysis (SCA), principal component analysis (PCA), correlation matrices, ANOVAs, robust regression, classification algorithms, latent profile analysis (LPA)) for in-depth data analysis. • Assisted with MRI data acquisition on 3T (UCSF Sandler Neurosciences Center) and 7T (NexGen 7T at UC Berkeley) scanners. • Lead in data preprocessing, data analysis, writing, and presenting. Developed fMRI preprocessing and analysis pipeline from scratch. Pediatric hemorrhagic stroke: arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) and intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH)• Leveraged sMRI in a longitudinal design of three timepoints, six months apart, to investigate neuroplastic alterations in brain morphometry within both the ipsilesional and contralesional hemispheres following pediatric ICH and surgical interventions. Currently employing subject-specific tractography to generate edge density images (EDIs) of patients’ structural connectomes with the aim of further elucidating longitudinal alterations in white matter tracts. • Lead in data preprocessing, data analysis, writing, and presenting.

Graduate Researcher

Center For Computer Research In Music And Acoustics (Ccrma), Stanford University

Stanford, California, United States

Stanford Neuroscience and Music Lab (PI: Takako Fujioka)Behavioral portion of EEG experiment (accepted by Music Perception): https://osf.io/preprints/psyarxiv/xwqubPreliminary Poster: https://www.neuromusic.ca/posters-2022/neural-and-perceptual-correlates-of-modal-incongruence-between-local-and-global-syntax/- Investigated auditory perception and cognition by carrying out psychology and neuroscience experiments using electroencephalography (EEG) and behavioral methods.- Worked on independent research examining the event-related potentials (ERPs) produced in response to different harmonic resolutions, or cadence types, particularly those involving major-to-minor and minor-to-major mode transitions. ERPs of interest included the early right anterior negativity (ERAN), P3, and N5. Behavioral ratings involved arousal, valence, and degree of completion felt in response to the various cadences.- Involved in all stages of the experimental process, including study and survey design, stimulus creation, data collection, preprocessing, analysis, writing, and presenting.

Undergraduate And Graduate Researcher

Center For Computer Research In Music And Acoustics (Ccrma), Stanford University

Stanford University, California, United States

Music Engagement Research Initiative (MERI) (PI: Jonathan Berger)- Participated in EEG research on the processing of music and speech in individuals with autism. Assisted in study design and data collection.- Conducted an undergraduate capstone project on auditory spatial processing. Created custom pitch detection and vibrato analysis software. Analyzed the variability of note length and string vibrato usage (e.g., oscillation wavelength and amplitude) in wet and dry virtual acoustic environments.
