Profile bio

About Hannah Pullen-Blasnik

I am a researcher focused on criminalization, technology, and urban geography. I work to develop impact-oriented research, tell data-driven stories, and advocate for just policy and legislative change. I am a Senior Data Scientist at Vera Institute of Justice and a Sociology Ph.D. Candidate at Columbia University with a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship. My work examines how political and economic power impact the criminal legal system and urban regulation. My dissertation looks at corporate real estate investment and its relationship to gentrification and local policing patterns in New York City. I also show how algorithms and surveillance technologies alter policing, prosecution, and incarceration, focusing on the human decision-makers behind these tools. I use a range of statistical, spatial, and computational methods to analyze large-scale administrative and proprietary data. I also conduct qualitative interviews and archival analyses, particularly of legal and financial documents, to add complementary insight that large-scale data may overlook.I am a researcher on a number of collaborative projects, including Incite Institute's Criminal Legal Algorithms, Technology, and Expertise project, Data and Racial Inequality Project, and Movements Against Mass Incarceration Lab. My recent publication examines how DNA analysis software poses new sources of bias and questions to expert status in the courtroom. I have also worked at the Columbia Justice Lab, where my 2021 publication found that 1 in 9 Black men in PA are held in solitary confinement by the time they are 32, more than 8 times the risk that white men face. I have also volunteered data management, analysis, and visualization skills for local government offices and nonprofits including Data for Black Lives, the ACLU of Massachusetts, and NY State Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani. Previously, I worked as a Senior Data Scientist in digital media marketing, where I managed big data and machine learning projects.

Listed skills include Editing, Research, Social Media, Creative Writing, and 15 others.
