Hannes Hulstaert is the co-founder and CTO of Post Carbon Lab, a biotech and textile company offering sustainable microbial colours and finishes for industrial applications.Hannes possesses 11 years of engineering knowledge and skills which he applies to the systematic development of microbial cultivation, colour extraction, data analysis, and industrial applications. His extensive understanding of photobioreactors and industrial machinery enables a cost-effective increase in capacity. His proficiency in data analysis, driven by his fondness for spreadsheets, forms the foundation for IP development and financial modelling, both crucial in scaling up the commercial and environmental impacts of microbial colours.Originally trained as an architect, Hannes' career has encompassed a range of creative and scientific disciplines, including audiovisual communication, colour research and analysis, design, and fabrication. Hannes' writings on unconventional approaches to social, cultural, and urban architectural analysis were published in STUDIO Architecture and Urbanism magazine. In 2015, he was honoured with the Henry van de Velde Prize and has previously conducted workshops at the Department of Architecture at the University of Antwerp. Hannes is currently a part of the Design Council Expert Network.Post Carbon Lab transform CO2 into colours, dyes/pigments and coatings with microbes for the textile and polymer industry. They employ bio-based colour and chemical alternatives to carbon-intensive petrochemical ones to support the net-zero transition. They had the opportunity to collaborate with major brands like McQ (under Alexander McQueen), and DS Automobiles, as well as many independent designers, to pilot their groundbreaking technologies. Their work has garnered recognition through various awards, including Innovate UK, TATA Varsity Pitch, Renaissance Award, and Creative Enterprise Award. Their achievements have been featured in reputable publications such as The Guardian, Financial Times, and National Geographic.
