Within the politically influenced Corporate Business Improvement team of this £1billion annual business, I used this senior management role to lead my team of 12 to deliver a rolling programme of change and improvements to better the organisation's ability to deliver more outcomes. I used a variety of techniques to ensure successful delivery such as Continuous Improvement and Portfolio, Programme and Project Management.Challenges as part of this role were:* Design a strategy in collaboration with GDS (Government Digital Services) to introduce Agile Project Management to the business.* Mature and align our varied Portfolio and Project assurance approaches.* Set up a Corporate Project, Programme and Portfolio Management Centre of Excellence. * Project Director for a pilot to test out a new on-line collaborative staff suggestion scheme and identify what change is needed to garner a deeper willingness for Executive Managers to innovate.* Project Director for a project to identify and deliver a series of improvements to ensure our Quality Management Standards are meaningful and adhered to and that we show best practice in our ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and EMAS registrations. * Improve the organisation's ability to assess and demonstrate the value for money delivered by its activities.

Introduce Portfolio Management (and later Programme Management) to the direction setting department of approx 400 staff with a project spend of between £10m and £20m. The role included:* Ensuring the Director and Executive Managers prioritised and approved the best portfolio of work that achieved our strategic goals and best value.* Reporting prioritization and delivery progress and running the processes.* Gathering support from managers of all levels to change the way they and their departments handled project/change spend.* Designing and embedding financial management, data management, governance and analysis processes and sourcing the resources to run them.

Working across the majority of the business (Operations and Head Office) to shape the requirements for IT investment work and report on progress, approx £15m portfolio. My hands-on experience of how to project manage and programme manage IT was invaluable for this role: * Setting the standards for IT business cases to ensure clear decision making.* Creating and assuring IT business cases in partnership with project managers * Visualising and reporting on key benefits and delivery progress to help senior managers understand the health of our IT portfolio.* Developing and sustaining better relationships with the IT department. * Final point of escalation before issues or risks were taken to the appropriate senior level boards.

Develop and embed a Project Support Office model in the department. This role included:* Creating a desire for the service amongst Executive Managers and their teams.* Running the work as a best practice, exemplar project to generate case study material.* Project management of a pilot wiki to house the entire organisation’s instructions and templates on project, programme and portfolio management.* Line managing and recruitment for the team which grew from 3 to 14 staff. * Development of fit for purpose templates, training and workshop materials.

My 6 month contract involved creating a learning framework for a department of 400 people which stated the need for frequently run, short training workshops for all levels of project management.

This was a small company so my versatile skill set came in handy:* Coding and debugging web builds in HTML, Python and our CMS of choice, Plone. * Converting Photoshop files to flexible CSS skins.* Planning, managing, testing and client-handling multiple projects during all stages of development including: flash games, collaborative websites and web applications, animation and cd/dvd build.* Studio resource scheduling, recruitment and day to day management of the Bristol studio of 10-15 people.
