Since 2009 I am Managing Director of Tunnel Engineering Consultancy (TEC). TEC is a joint venture of Royal HaskoningDHV and Witteveen+Bos, focusing on the international tunnel market and one of the very few lead immersed tunnel consultants. I combine the management responsibility for TEC with a Project Director and Senior consultant roles in large tunnel projects, a combination very suitable for me as a director operating in the international niche market of immersed tunnels. Underground design and construction has been the backbone of my whole career and continues to give the challenges every engineer is looking for (also see positions in North/South Metro Line below). I have worked in many national and international immersed tunnel projects as (Senior) designer, Design Leader and Consultant, such as the Noord tunnel, Piet Heintunnel, HSL tunnels, NSL tunnels (NL), Medway tunnel and New Tyne Tunnel (UK), Limerick tunnel (Ireland), Hong Kong Zhuhai Macau Bridge Link, Shenzhong Link in China, Femernbelt Link (Denmark), Marieholmtunnel (Sweden), the Sharq Crossing in Doha and the Santos Guaruja Crossing in Brazil. Knowlegde transfer is high on my agenda. I am lecturer in Immersed Tunnels on Delft Univerisity of Technology and for the ITA CET (International Tunneling Association).

I have been involved in the North/South Metro Line in Amsterdam for many years, Starting as (senior) civil engineer, I moved to the position of Design Leader, Contract Manager, Senior Consultant and finally to Project Director of one of the two partners in Adviesbureau Noord/Zuidlijn (Eng. North/South Line Consultants).The period from 1994 to 2001 involved the following:- Development of tailor made design philosophy and design of deep stations (up to 35 m below ground level, soft soil conditions, high water tables) in urban environment (metro stations Central Station, Rokin, Vijzelgracht and Ceintuurbaan);- Feasibility Study and Design of an immersed tunnel under the main railway station (Central Station) in Amsterdam (poor foundation conditions and sensitive structures), including design of supporting structures for the historical station building for the purpose of construction of the immersion trench;- Design of an immersed tunnel under the IJ river (total length 370 m), with poor foundation conditions.Design running sections by means of pneumatic caissons in Open Havenfront and Natte Damrak (Amsterdam Canals)In the period 2001-2003 I was contract manager a.i. for the contract Central Station. From 2004 to 2006 I was responsible for the preparation of special sub-contract for extecution of innovative building pits under A’dam Central Station with a special shared risk management approach (some similarities to Alliance contract). Thereafter I became the Cairman of a Steering Group for design and construction of one of these innovative concepts: the co called Sandwich wall, consisting of tworows of steel piles with an intermediate jetgrout body constructed under very complex circumstances under the historic station building of Amsterdam Central Railway Station.

In this period I was responsible for a group (approx 40 staff) of project managers, consultants, structural and geotechnical engineers, CAD Designers and supervisors working on large infrastructural projects. The combination with my position in the North/South Line was challenging but possible since many of the group were involved in the various North/South Line contracts.
