As a Senior System Safety Engineer I was responsible for reviewing the Battle Management System (BMS) software, assessing the potential safety hazards, and recommending additional safety controls to mitigate the identified system risk. The BMS software is responsible for control of weapon systems onboard both aircraft and ships. • Performed System and Subsystem Hazard Analysis and System Requirements Hazard Analysis, in accordance with MIL-STD-882E, on the BMS software aboard the Patrol Coastal and Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) configurations.• Performed requirements review of BMS software for the LCS configuration and proposed additional requirements to mitigate the identified system risk.• Assessed all requirements for safety impact and traced all safety related hazards to existing system hazards, or when necessary identified additional safety hazards.• Performed risk assessments for proposed design changes to the BMS software and presented findings to government customers.• Supported various Working Group, Integrated Product Team, Design, and Local Configuration Control Board meetings to assess proposed changes for safety and risk impacts to the BMS.• Supported customer with safety analysis products used in WSESRB, FISTRP, and SSSTRP review boards and approval prior to fielding of BMS configurations.• Reviewed hazard data entry process and recommended changes to improve efficiency of data capture.

As a System Safety Engineer I was responsible for reviewing proposed upgrades and additions to the Ballistic Missile Defense System and identifying potential safety concerns as well as mitigations to reduce the identified system risk. I applied Safeware’s innovative STPA methodology to identify previously unidentified hazard causes. Briefed SES and General Officer level managers on findings. Followed MIL-STD-882 for safety tasking.• Developed System Safety Program Plan for the Ballistic Missile Defense System. Includes interaction between multiple element-level safety programs to produce system-level safety documents.• Identified over 30 system-level hazards that had previously been unidentified resulting in over $100M design changes. • Worked to develop a solution to allow for simultaneous testing, training, and operations on same equipment over the same network. Used encryption to allow for separation of data because developing an entire new network for test and training was not feasible.• Participated and led Safety Working Group meetings to identify potential issues and mitigations to identified safety hazards.• Developed test cases to adequately test the independence of safety controls. As a Principal Safety Engineer I was responsible for creating safety data packages for several launch campaigns. I followed both MIL-STD-882 and AFSPCMAN 91-710 requirements and tailored those as necessary for individual programs. I also supported OSHA safety analysis and waivers for potentially hazardous lifting operations.• Drafted official system safety data packages for launch vehicles/payloads (COTS, SES-8, and AMAZONAS) to document identified hazards, controls in place to mitigate the hazards, and verification of properly working safety controls.• Created an automated training matrix in order to identify training gaps prior to and during launch campaigns. Resulted in a reduction in time to complete this task by 75%.• Provided surge support on several missions to draft safety deliverable documents to allow for programs to proceed and launch on schedule.• Worked with customer to identify all HAZMAT used at site and plan spare HAZMAT required to perform maintenance activities.• Assisted Orbital corporate management in assessing hazardous conditions associated with lifting operations and provided mitigations and potential paths forward to gain formal acceptance. As a Multi-Disciplined Engineer I was responsible for system safety, system reliability, and system maintainability tasks on numerous programs. Systems included hardware and software for flight control systems for UAVs, radar systems for stealth Navy battleships, and Homeland Security scanning systems. Followed MIL-STD-882 for system safety tasks, MIL-HDBK-217 for reliability predictions, and MIL-STD-472 for system maintainability tasks.• Developed Software Safety program at Raytheon to investigate the potential software hazard causes to catastrophic failure of the Global Hawk ground system. Began to deploy the software safety program to other software intensive programs at Raytheon.• Developed hardware and software reliability prediction tool to be used to assess the system reliability. The tool was used on multiple programs including Global Hawk, DDX (now DDG 1000), and various Homeland Security programs.• Created templates for System Safety Program Plans for various small programs that did not have individual safety programs.• Assisted in developing company-wide templates for safety and reliability documents, checklists, and audits.
