Manager of different EU, AusAid, FAO and BMZ funded rural development projects. Focus on Food and Nutrition Security, participatory Land Use Planning, Linking Agriculture with Nutrition and Natural Resource Management, Value Chain Analysis, Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land (VGGT), Land grabbing, Ebola Viral Disease (EVD) Mitigation and Community Rehabilitation after complex disasters

The assignement started briefly after the declaration of peace in Sierra Leone. The goal of the project “Organisational development of Caritas Kenema” was to change the existing structure of Caritas Kenema, which was strongly coined by relief activities, into an efficient and self-sustaining diocesan relief and development office which is able to plan and implement all projects deemed necessary and in line with its mandate.

I was responsible for the technical coaching and management of the project for “Sustainable agriculture on improved soil fertility and crop management in the Miru Area, North Hwanghae Province”. The project was the first bilateral development project in DPRK. The overall goal of the project was “To contribute to increased crop production, improved soil fertility and crop management in North Hwanghae Province (and in the Miru area in particular), while improving the management of fertilisers”. To achieve the goal a set of new cropping patterns (multiple/inter cropping) was designed and implemented on six co-operative farms. The project provided expertise in sustainable agriculture, new crop varieties, seeds, fertiliser and agricultural implements.

Conducted during the time span of 20 months three long-term monitoring and evaluation missions to DPRK. The monitoring and evaluation missions included the following main tasks:• Monitoring of FAO`s contribution to the double cropping program to intensify the agricultural Land use and developing suggestions for a double cropping program with Winter Wheat. • Monitoring and evaluation of the double cropping program of 1997 and 1998• Participating in “FAO/WFP Crop and Food Supply Assessment Mission” to assess the crop prospects• Assessing the agricultural input supply situation and up-date of agricultural input requirement• Preparing project proposals for emergency assistance to improve the food security situation• Reviewing FAO`s projects within the “UN Consolidated Appeal" of 1997 and 1998• Participating in the joint “FAO/WFP Drought Assessment Mission” to assess the effects of drought for the agricultural sector • Coordinating and monitoring the distribution of FAO’s fertilizer contribution to DPRK• Preparing project proposals for the support of the double cropping program for 1998 and 1999.

The goal of the “Project for integrated rural development of Murambi in Kigali, Ruanda” was the identification, test and dissemination of best options for improving the subsistence and food security situation of rural households in the sub-prefecture of Murambi. The project started already in 1992, but the civil war brought the activities to a standstill. After peace was re-established the project had to undergo a reframing process for better responding to the post-war social and economical environment. The main tasks were as follows:• Preparing and organizing the transition phase from an agricultural emergency program to a long term development project• Assessing and analyzing the problems of the target groups (participatory rural appraisal) • Identifying and selecting local self-help groups and local partners• Preparing, monitoring and evaluating of activities to support local self help groups in agriculture, seed multiplication, animal husbandry, forestry and marketing of agricultural inputs • Preparing and coordinating ‘Food for Work’ activities covering afforestation and rehabilitation of local infrastructure (roads, buildings of public schools etc.)• Planning of a resettlement project for refugees in the forest area of Arusha, Rwanda

My work was focused on the agricultural program line of “Emergency Aid I & II, Rwanda - Refugee Camps in Goma, Zaire” with following tasks:• Planning, preparing and coordinating the agricultural emergency program (seed and tools program)• Organizing and monitoring the selection, procurement and delivery of seeds (beans, sorghum, peas and maize) and tools• Preparing and monitoring the agricultural input and food distribution to 60.000 households• Preparing and coordinating ‘Food for Work’ activities• Preparing and implementing strategies to strengthen the local self-help capacity of peasant groups in seed multiplication, animal husbandry, cash crops and natural resource protection • Establishing a framework for integration of local NGOs in the program• Preparing and conducting different studies to evaluate the impact of the program.

My tasks within the “Emergency Aid Program of the Ministry of Cooperation for Bosnia-Herzegovina and Emergency Aid Program of the Foreign Office for Bosnia-Herzegovina” included the following:• Preparing a spring seed program as well as an agricultural rehabilitation program for specific regions in Bosnia –Herzegovina• Assessing the needs in the agriculture sector and preparing project proposals related to agricultural rehabilitation• Coordinating the local input purchase • Coordinating the implementation and monitoring of the spring seed program

I was member of the interdisciplinary research project "Agrarian Reproduction in Bangladesh” that involved six researchers and had a special focus on the economic, social and cultural survival strategies of rural households and village communities. The field and data collection phase of the project in Bogra District of Bangladesh was around 20 months. The main activities included• Applying a set of empirical methods to analyze peasants livelihoods and the complexity of the agrarian structure• Preparing and conducting long term studies of peasant households• Analysis of the collected data with SPSSX package• Preparing the thesis "Land Use System in Bangladesh. Socio-Economic Strategies of Survival."

The main tasks entrusted comprised the following:• Technical and administrative support of the Food Security programs including “Back-stopping missions”• Backstopping in the field of plant production and erosion control• Selecting and recruiting staff for on-going and new projects • Review of project reports and analysis of project activities
