About Hans Stedman

As a mechanical engineer, I create value by learning and problem solving through rapid design iteration and hands-on work with the product. I excel in achieving design simplicity through persistent focus on customer needs and product requirements. Thanks to many hours spent bringing life to my designs in prototyping labs and machine shops, I shine designing creatively while working within manufacturing or assembly constraints unique to each solution.I have worked across a spectrum of manufacturing environments from high volume battery production at the Tesla Gigafactory to low volume production of rocket components at Blue Origin. Whether at companies of fifty thousand employees or five, I have delivered results - especially when problems have been loosely defined or minimal resources have required creative thinking. While I regard my ability to work self sufficiently, my straightforward communication and approachable personality make me a valuable addition to any team.

  • Revolve Solar
    Founder
Revolve Solar Sep 2022 - Present
    Seattle, Washington, United States
I created Revolve Solar to address the growing problem of solar panel waste. Currently, nine out of every ten solar panels are landfilled at end-of-life, contributing to a pileup of expensive and hazardous waste. At Revolve Solar, we are targeting the problem of solar panel landfilling by converting retired solar photovoltaic panels into products that consumers can use to live sustainably and reduce waste in the process.
  • Ilmarinen Llc
    Senior Mechanical Engineer
    Ilmarinen Llc May 2021 - Aug 2022
    Carnation, Washington, United States
Il Marinen was created from the dissolution of the drones program at Vulcan Inc. with the goal of continuing Paul Allen's vision of creating low cost, high performance AI-enabled UAV swarms to combat poaching in Africa. At Il Marinen, I rejoined a team of my colleagues from my previous time at Vulcan. My responsibilities included the conception, functional requirements tracking, trade studies, design, prototyping, and final procurement of UAS (Unmanned Aerial System) components, which were manufactured via carbon fiber molding, a variety of additive manufacturing processes, and conventional machining. I was the chief designer behind the payload interface, airspeed sensor, and VTOL motor units on a new drone design.Upon the completion of hardware design and procurement, I led the mechanical assembly of our first engineering build and the five flight-capable airframes which followed that. I participated in flight and performance testing across multiple of these airframes, and designed and constructed ground support equipment for use by the Il Marinen operations team.Following hardware tests and airframe performance validation, my role consisted of design improvements following DFMA (design for manufacturing and assembly) principles, improved documentation, and creation of work instructions to enable production of our airframe at an increased scale.
  • Blue Origin
    Manufacturing Engineer - Rotational Program
    Blue Origin Jan 2020 - May 2021
    Greater Seattle Area
I was employed at Blue Origin as a manufacturing engineer within the New Graduate rotational program. I rotated through three teams on three of Blue Origin's business units throughout my first year with the company. While with the New Glenn manufacturing and tooling team, I designed assembly tooling to facilitate the installation of valve seals and led the development of material handling plans to improve the safety and efficiency of flight hardware movements within and outside of the factory. I further refined the handling plan concept with the BE-4 Combustion Devices team, created work instructions to guide assembly of engine components, and designed packaging to improve part protection. In my last rotation, I joined a small team of manufacturing engineers in Blue's Advanced Development Programs, where I helped to develop the initial assembly plans for Blue's lunar lander design as part of their Artemis program proposal. After the end of my third rotation, I stayed with the lunar lander team, where I further refined our work instructions. I led the use of virtual reality to interact with lunar lander CAD to improve our understanding of interactions and constraints between technicians and flight hardware.
  • Vulcan Inc.
    Mechanical Engineer
    Vulcan Inc. Sep 2019 - Dec 2019
    Seattle, Wa
I joined the drones team at Vulcan Inc. for a four-month contract as a mechanical engineer to help design and prototype UAS (Unmanned Aerial Systems) for use in African game parks as a surveillance tool to prevent poaching of elephants and other endangered species. At Vulcan, I was responsible for the design, manufacturing and assembly of both ground support equipment and UAS flight hardware. I concepted, assembled and tested a frame to improve the accuracy of airframe compass calibration. I developed improved designs for the VTOL (Vertical Takeoff and Landing) motor brackets of these airframes, designed nosecone concepts to improve aerodynamics of the front of the fuselage, and took part in tracking hardware across a bill of materials to improve the team's understanding of airframe weight and airframe center of gravity.
  • University Of Pennsylvania
    Masters Student
University Of Pennsylvania Sep 2017 - May 2019
    Greater Philadelphia Area
At the University of Pennsylvania, I sub-matriculated from my undergraduate degree in the Mechanical Engineering program to a graduate degree in Robotics at the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. Within my master's degree program, I augmented my understandings of mechanical and manufacturing engineering with learnings from the fields of electrical and software engineering.Over the course of my two year program, I took courses ranging from control theory, to computer vision, to product design. These courses ranged from mainly theoretical to quite hands on and culminated in the design and assembly of a car-shaped robot in my Mechatronics course. This robot was designed to compete in a head-to-head battle against other student created robots and took second place in the competition at the end of the class.I am greatly appreciative of my education in the robotics program as it enabled me to expand my understanding of engineering beyond my mechanical fundamentals and more confidently begin my career in a highly integrated environment where most technological systems utilize concepts from multiple fields of engineering.
  • Tesla
    Manufacturing Engineering Intern
    Tesla Jun 2018 - Aug 2018
    Reno, Nevada Area
In the summer of 2018, I rejoined the Model 3 Battery pack team for a second stint as a manufacturing engineering intern. I returned to the team with increased responsibility over developing solutions to improve cycle time and technician ergonomics on the battery pack line.Over the summer, I worked on a number of solutions to decrease the time for battery pack assembly and decrease the difficulty of the manual tasks that assembly technicians had to perform. My tasks included the design and implementation of a visual aid component for a robotic cell which would indicate improper assembly to technicians. In addition, I created and implemented multiple assembly workstation improvements to improve the ergonomics for those technicians. These improvements included a machine for lifting adhesive buckets and the installation of pull-cords and other safety enhancing features.
