Hans has worked since 2010 as an aquatic and fisheries biologist in coastal environments and freshwater systems in Washington and Alaska, often in remote locations. He focuses on ecological analyses, particularly to evaluate nearshore ecosystems for project-related impacts to endangered and threatened species. In addition, Hans has successfully managed a number of construction oversight projects, including directing environmental compliance efforts for the Navy and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) in some of the largest in-water construction projects in the Pacific Northwest. Related work includes preparing marine mammal (National Marine Fisheries Service) and marbled murrelet (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service) monitoring plans, Biological Evaluations, and Incidental Harassment Authorization applications. Hans has broad experience conducting fieldwork – including fish exclusion, forage fish spawn sampling, water quality monitoring, and nearshore fish and benthic invertebrate surveys – for permitting and restoration projects in waterbodies from small creeks in the Washington Cascades to large bays in Cook Inlet, Alaska. Hans is proficient with ArcGIS, using it for assessment and mapping on dozens of projects.
