Senior Mechatronics Engineer
Senior Systems Engineer
• Designed and built multiple R&D instruments, including optical, fluidics, mechanical and electrical subsystems, for loading microfluidic chips, live cell imaging, and lithography applications.• Managed teams of up to six with diverse technical backgrounds for Company’s commercial instrument and software development efforts, with all projects meeting or exceeding defined milestones.• Self-taught and initiated migration of company AI software tool suite to Pytorch and Detectron2, greatly speeding up image classification/segmentation model training and accuracy, as well as core functionality.• Programmed multithreaded GUIs and firmware libraries to control mechanical actuation, autofocusing, imaging, and fluidics.• Designed and assembled PCBs for instrument microfluidics control and power distribution/management.• Set up company engineering infrastructure including but not limited to electrical testbench and rapid prototyping capabilities.• Trained to produce microfluidics chips at the Stanford Nanofabrication Facility and consulted on buildup of company’s dedicated cleanroom facilities.
Microfabrication Engineer
• Fabricated thin film electrode devices with micron scale features using metal evaporators, mask aligners, and silicon etchers.• Designed PCBs and FPCs for electrical and electrochemical tests on micron scale electrode arrays.• Designed mechanical fixtures and parts for material strength tests, electroplating jigs, sample polishing mounts. • Assembled complex (~50 steps) neuro-medical devices and developed assembly and testing protocols for QA. • Developed software to characterize the success rate of device assembly, surgery yield, electrode signal quality, and electrode longevity in in-vivo environments.• Repaired and upgraded obsolete heavy equipment like old laser cutters, profilometers, solder jets, and vacuum ovens.
Engineering Consultant - Gordon Lab
This position started as a capstone project and led to employment following project success. Background context: STROBE (Sip TRiggered Optogenetic Behavioral Enclosure) - Project goal was to create an integrated system where genetically modified flies with light sensitive proteins feed in an arena and light stimulus is given to trigger certain neural impulses in order to study taste circuits. The feeding arena already exists and we designed and built the optogenetic module and software.• Designed lighting circuit and PCB layout with protection for expensive high power LEDs from humid environment or pipetting leak. • Designed mechanical housing for the optogenetic module with comfortable access for researcher’s hand and pipette, easy detachment of the module from the flyPAD, and shielding from external light interference.• Used VHDL to configure FPGA to handle data collection from and output lighting signals to 16 simultaneous flyPADs and their optogenetic lighting extensions. • Group’s project won the Eric Roenitz Memorial Award for project ingenuity. • Success led to publications pending peer review and employment to make more STROBE systems.• Troubleshooted and improved robustness to give longer lifespan in continuous usage in humid environments with the second version of the system.• Modified designs to create ultraviolet STROBE units following promising results and rapid experimental progress with the normal STROBE systems. • Wrote technical detail sections for two publications (publication pending).
Research Student
• Programmed lab equipment to carry out automated experiments with LabVIEW.• Soldered custom cable assemblies to allow lab group to use old electronics that was perfect for our experimental setup needs.• Debugged previous glitchy versions of software and left the research group with fully functional automated software with additional useful functionalities. • Disassembled a fume hood and routed gas lines from the wall canisters to fume hood nozzles. Performed leakage and structural soundness tests.• Results published in the 101st Canadian Chemistry Conference (co-author).
Cloaking Research Student
• Designed and carried out experiments for measuring effectiveness of an magnetic field cloak under steady and transient input conditions.• Built amplifier and filter circuits for experiment signals and regulating circuits for high amperage coil power supply.• Debugged several signal coupling issues that stumped past students & researchers on this project and achieved crucial results that verified the researcher’s theory. • Results published at the PIERS 2016 Shanghai Conference (co-author).
Physics Research And Engineering Intern
• Designed (mechanical & software) and implemented an automated system for dispensing picoliters per second of sample solution unto an moving array of 100 micron wells with reproducibility. • Developed production protocol of a highly acidic gel for pairing with conventional LAESI (Laser Ablation Electrospray Ionization) methods, acquiring pharmaceutical companies’ funding with its promising results.• Designed static and actuated mechanical parts for atmospheric and vacuum experiments.• Built case for power supply and wired it up for pairing with experimental equipment.
Web Design & Webmapping Intern
• Enhanced a GIS web application that uses PostgreSQL and PHP to send alerts to subscribers.• Created a front end UI using HTML and PHP for users to subscribe to MSC weather alerts: https://ecalertme.weather.gc.ca/home_en.php that was deployed with great success for the 2015 Pan-Am Games.• Designed and implemented database structure to link weather alerts to subscribers.• Soldered radio circuitry and wired up telecom ports.
