Haonan Gong Work Experience Details
  • Alpha Mission, Cornell Space Systems Design Studio
    Engineering Undergraduate Researcher
Alpha Mission, Cornell Space Systems Design Studio Feb 2024 - Present
    Ithaca, New York, United States
The Alpha CubeSat mission goal is to test a prototype light sail carried by a CubeSat, which will be launched from the International Space Station. I work in the Attitude Control System subteam, which is responsible for developing the Attitude system, using magnetorquers to control the detumbling and orientation of the light sail as it is ejected from the CubeSat.
  • Cornell University
    Astrobiology Undergraduate Researcher
Cornell University Aug 2023 - Present
    Ithaca, New York, United States
I am part of the Carl Sagan Institute, which aims to bring find life in our universe, developing a toolkit that can be used to find biosignatures on planets outside our solar system. I work under Professor Lisa Kaltenegger and Dr. Ligia Coelho, to study and develop a pipeline to identify biosignatures in water using reflection spectra data, along with creating a corresponding database and GUI of biosignatures. This will be used to inform future projects on finding life on water worlds.
  • Cornell University
    Astronomical Instrumentation Undergraduate Researcher
Cornell University Aug 2023 - Present
    Ithaca, New York, United States
I will be continuing my work over the summer, to characterize detectors that will be used on the Fred Young Submillimeter Telescope.
  • Cornell University
    Astronomical Instrumentation Undergraduate Researcher
    Cornell University Jun 2023 - Jul 2023
    Ithaca, New York, United States
I am part of the CCAT-Prime project, which aims to build the Fred Young Submillimeter Telescope in the Atacama Desert in Chile, which aims to discover more about the beginning and evolution of our universe, along with a plethora of other astrophysical questions. I work under Professor Michael Niemack and Dr. Steve Choi to test and characterize the Microwave Kinetic Inductance Detectors to be used on the upcoming telescope, specifically designing and building a cold load blackbody source and developing code to accurately measure the optical efficiency received by the detectors.
  • Caltech
    Summer Fellowship Researcher
    Caltech Jun 2024 - Aug 2024
    Pasadena, California, United States
As part of the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) at Caltech, I am completing a Planetary Science project under Professor Katherine de Kleer. I am working on understanding volcanism and the geology of Io, one of Jupiter's moons. Specifically, how the volcanism is affected by gravitational forces from Jupiter and its other moons. I aggregated evidence of volcanic activity on Io, from the Gemini N Telescope, Keck Observatory, Galileo Spacecraft and Juno Spacecraft. I am modeling the stress on Io's surface from gravitational forces, and comparing with telescope data to find correlations and understand it's influence on Io. This will also help us constrain what we know about the interior workings of the moon.
  • Aroboticscompany
    Robotics Summer Intern
    Aroboticscompany Jul 2021 - Jul 2022
    Ossining, New York, United States
    - Collaborated with a group of ~15 members on designing and building robots- Programmed and wired various sensors and motors, including LIDAR, Stereo Camera, DC motor, 3-Phase Motor, Actuator, etc., and implemented them on the robots- Implemented new functionalities to the GUI for controlling the robots- Fabricated robotic components through metalwork and CAD- Documented instructions on how to use certain programs and technology, for current and future members to use
  • Regeneron
    Biochemistry Research Intern
    Regeneron Jun 2021 - Jun 2022
    Tarrytown, New York, United States
    - Conducted a research project studying the genetics of a rare and severe disease: -Mucopolysaccharidosis VI, with the guidance of a researcher, Andrew Baik- Developed a methodology, involving the use of computational programs to model proteins and prediction algorithms on patient data, to identify high-interest mutations that cause the disease- Results of the study intend to contribute to developing tools for doctors to more accurately diagnose patients with the disease- Enrolled in the Regeneron Mentorship Program, learning from various researchers at Regeneron regarding molecular biology and research skills
