About Hercules Haralambides

Since 1992, I am professor of Maritime Economics & Logistics (MEL), having taught at 9 universities (and in 7 different countries), most prominent of which being Erasmus University Rotterdam and National University of Singapore. In 2015, I founded Haralambides & Associates (www.maritimeeconomics.eu): a global think-tank of academics, business executives and high-end consultants in the 'maritime' sector, i.e. shipping; ports; terminals; transport; and maritime logistics. H&A engages in policy advice, executive education and contract research. In 1999, I founded MEL, i.e., the Center (and MSc) of "Maritime Economics & Logistics", and the Palgrave-MacMillan journal under the same name (www.palgrave.com/41278). The MEL journal is today a household name in quality maritime research, from Stanford University to the 4 corners of the earth. In 1992, together with R.O. Goss and Tor Wergeland, I founded the International Association of Maritime Economists (IAME).Finally, in 2011, I handed over the daily management of the MEL MSc course back to the Erasmus School of Economics, so as to be able to take over the Presidency of the Port Authority of Brindisi: A small provincial town of Southern Italy (Apulian Region) which taught me the problems of economic dualism and underdevelopment in the best possible hands-on way.In 2008, I was decorated with the Golden Cross of the Order of the Phoenix by the President of the Hellenic Republic.

Listed skills include Logistics, Shipping, Maritime, Transportation, and 12 others.

Brindisi

A most worthwhile experience which, in 4 years, taught my as much as the academia did in 30. We often read and write a lot on the "intricate links" between media; politicians; business; and government, but living this in my skin for 4 years has transformed the way I look at social development and the future of southern Europe (a book is forthcoming...).

Member Of Commissioner Neil Kinnock'S Group Of Port Experts

I remember Neil Kinnock telling me with a big smile: "So you decided to spend time on port pricing; well, I promise you one thing: you will retire on the same subject". (and how true he was). The document I attach was my background text out of which appeared Kinnock's "Green Paper on Ports and Maritime Infrastructure".

Member Of Commissioner Neil Kinnock'S 'Wise Men' Group On Maritime Transport

Brussels Area, Belgium

The Group produced one of the European Commission's most influential maritime strategy documents, a "green paper with white edges", as Kinnock himself had described it. That was "Towards a New Maritime Strategy". From this work, the "Quality Shipping Campaign" evolved, spearheaded by Neil Kinnock and Glenda Jackson, as well as my book "Quality Shipping: Market Mechanisms for Safer Shipping and Cleaner Oceans".
