We often read and write a lot on the "intricate links" between media; politicians; business; and government, but living this in my skin for 4 years has transformed the way I look at social development and the future of southern Europe (a book is forthcoming...).

In 1989, upon receiving the Yokohama Medal for Research Excellence (Japan), I founded the Special Interest Group (SIG2) on Maritime Transport and Ports of the World Conference on Transport Research Society (WCTRS): the world’s largest and most renowned platform of transportation research where I also sat in the Scientific and Publications Committees. I chaired SIG2 for almost 20 years, to retire in 2007.

I remember Neil Kinnock telling me with a big smile: "So you decided to spend time on port pricing; well, I promise you one thing: you will retire on the same subject". (and how true he was). The document I attach was my background text out of which appeared Kinnock's "Green Paper on Ports and Maritime Infrastructure".

The Group produced one of the European Commission's most influential maritime strategy documents, a "green paper with white edges", as Kinnock himself had described it. That was "Towards a New Maritime Strategy". From this work, the "Quality Shipping Campaign" evolved, spearheaded by Neil Kinnock and Glenda Jackson, as well as my book "Quality Shipping: Market Mechanisms for Safer Shipping and Cleaner Oceans".

This was the period when the Department of Maritime Studies was being built from scratch. Much of the credit is due to a colorful Cephalonian, principal lecturer at Ealing College, London, Basil Metaxas. RIP. My experiences with this unique individual are well worth a book!
