About Hara Madhav Talasila

Hardware-software engineer and researcher with 11 years of experience bridging the gap for advanced radar systems.I work with the Signal and Data Processing Group at the Center for Remote Sensing and Integrated Systems (CReSIS). As a Ph.D. candidate at CReSIS, I am working on the radiometric calibration of multichannel radar depth sounder data products and developing a full simulator for the Open Polar Radar toolbox. I worked with our processing pipeline to process and analyze snow radar data, generate and publish data products collected during NASA's Operation IceBridge field campaigns, in which I participated. Previously, I worked with the Radar Engineering team at CReSIS for over four years, focusing on the development of radar modules, aircraft installation, and field deployments to polar regions.

Processed raw radar data and published data products, analysis results, and supporting datasets on CReSIS’ open data portal and delivered Level 1B Geolocated Radar Echo Strength Profiles to NASA Distributed Active Archive Center (DAAC) at the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC). Addressed data processing issues such as missing radar parameters, RF hardware filtering issues, and fast-time gain transitions to improve quality of radar data. Supported calibration, validation, and deployments for multiple versions of ultra-wide band snow radars.

Radar Hardware Lead for three NASA Operation IceBridge airborne campaigns. Participated in four deployments for operation and management of airborne radars used in measurements of ice and snow properties over Greenland, Antarctica, and surrounding seas. Authorized operator of the entire CReSIS radar suite that includes FMCW systems (2-8 GHz Snow radar, 12-18 GHz Ku-band radar, and 2-18 GHz UWB Snow radar with different transmit and receive paths) and high-power pulsed systems (180-210 MHz Multi-channel Coherent Radar Depth Sounder - MCoRDS, and a multi-channel 600-900 MHz Accumulation radar). Responsible for EAR regulated radar logistics, radar calibration, and performance monitoring. Integrated radar payloads on NASA aircraft platforms such as P-3B, Basler BT-67, and DC-8. Characterized beam patterns and reflection parameters of array antenna fairings for aircraft fuselages in EM anechoic chamber and debugged issues with multiple radar modules in the lab. Designed quick-switch dual-modular-redundant receiver and high-density multi-tier DC power modules. Created the protocol for our mission-critical RF & MW lab to address safety, organization, and training. Handled pre-mission preparation and deployment for two simultaneous NASA missions to Antarctica with our team that led to the “Team of the Year” nomination by The University of Kansas.

Developed a modular x16 frequency multiplier chain for a miniaturized NASA Global Hawk Snow Radar. Validated the design by non-linear system analysis and comprehensive EM hardware co-simulation. Designed 9 band-pass filters from VHF to V band, including edge-coupled microstrip filters on 5-mil alumina substrate (20-28 GHz, 40-56 GHz, and 38 GHz), interdigital cavity filters using aluminum (5-7 GHz and 10-14 GHz), and generalized LC filters (0.1-1.1 GHz). The alumina filters were tested at NIST, Michigan State Univ., Univ. of Massachusetts, and were featured in Microwave Journal for their 2 dB insertion loss and 12-17 dB return loss in worst-case, which are better than any other filters exceeding 33% fractional bandwidth ever reported in the literature. Assembled multipliers and characterized radar modules for a version of Snow Radar for US Naval Research Laboratory and Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research.

Worked under the supervision of Dr. Sudhakar Alapati at the Antenna Research Lab, where I conducted electromagnetic simulations using CST Microwave Studio to optimize loop and patch antenna designs for directed beam applications. Designed and analyzed multiple Patch Antenna arrays in IEEE V-band for inter-satellite communication. Built an electromagnetic model for a Reconfigurable and Beam Steerable Square Loop Antenna for vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) or vehicle-to-point (V2P) communication.
