It monitors food and consumer products to safeguard public health and animal health and welfare. The Authority controls the whole production chain, from raw materials and processing aids to end products and consumption. My specific task as an official veterinarian is to supervise the procedures on animal welfare and hygiene on slaughterhouses.I see to it that that the killing of animals is compliant with the applicable laws. Strict regulations apply to all different processes within the slaughterhouse. I see to it that procedures are in place to ensure that animals suffer as little (pain and trauma) as possible during transport, accommodation, securing, stunning, slaughtering or killing. All personnel have to prove their expertise. I see to it that the production of meat is compliant with applicable law. The safety and the trace-ability of meat and meat products is in principle the sector’s responsibility. The NVWA verifies whether these businesses and their products meet the legal requirements and if their procedures are in order. The NVWA also verifies whether the products are free from pathogens pollutants or carcinogens. The NVWA also keeps an eye on compliance with labeling regulation.I perform audits and inspections (as part of a team) at meat chilling and freezing plants to check compliance with EU regulation and specific checks on import requirements of third countries.Furthermore i have a specific task in certifying shipments of live animals for export within the EU or to third countries. Guarantees with respect to animal welfare requirements and the absence of certain diseases is checked and documented with a certificate. The supervision and compliance checks on the activities of several assembly centers for live animals is also part of my job.
