Led a cross-functional product, design, engineering team of between 5 and 7 while maintaining significant IC velocity. In 2020, our team delivered 3 major product features that have become the center pieces for Aptible's 2021 growth initiatives - Rooms, Vendor Management, and VSA responses. This team is routinely delivers exceptional results on hard, ambiguous problems.Highlights:* Implemented a highly effectively scrum/Agile process that delivers results of teams twice the size while maintaining exceptional work/life balance and individual sustainability. A staff engineer on the team said this is most productive he's ever been in his career while having the best work/life balance.* Introduced feature flagging and dark delivery to improve delivery and cycle times.* Sustained an exceptional quality and regression threshold - with no QA resources.* Worked closely with Product and Design to assess, plan, and iterate on product vision. Skilled at identifying valuable engineering trade-offs that maintain customer value while reducing development effort.Individual Contributions* Implemented an access control layer on top of ActiveStorage. This change allowed us to protect ActiveStorage with JWTs.* Implemented patterns for anonymous access and authorization to support Vendor Security Assessment feature set.* Identified and addressed a major security vulnerability in a back-office tool. Further investigation determined this vulnerability had not been exploited.* Many smaller contributions in favor of letting my reports tackle new and interesting problems.

Key technical leader on launch team for Dataroom product. Ruby on Rails, Typescript/React, and whatever else was needed.* Built access and authorization patterns for Dataroom product.* Tackled multiple sideband projects - focused on improving insights and reliability. Improved Sentry error handling and reporting, significantly enhanced New Relic monitoring and alerts, built a queue monitoring system in response to an outage, and added coverage monitoring with SimpleCov.* Improved reliability of queue system with additional of isolated priority queues. Time-sensitive jobs were moved to a critical queue with long-running jobs moving to a low priority queue. This significantly reduced blocking issues on time-sensitive queue events.* Built support for custom logo and branding (ActiveStorage)

Worked on launch team for a GRC product before transitioning to the launch team for a Dataroom product. Developed a reputation for effectively delivering features. Full stack in Ruby on Rails, Typescript/React, and a bit of Go.Highlights:* Significant contributions to Dataroom product and launch.* Built a nifty PDF watermarking service, in Go, that serves as the cornerstone for the datarooms product.* Refactored our authorization system (CanCanCan) to improve readability and maintainability for diverging product needs.* Built a lightweight key-based idempotency system for our queue system (Sidekiq). This allowed us to provide reasonable "exactly-once" guarantees for queue events - which were previously "at least once".* Built a scheduling and ticketing system that continues to serve as the backing for several core GRC and Vendor Management features.* Built components of a GRC asset tracking system that served as the core data model for several future integrations.

Hired by Spectrum Health to cofound Carol Health and lead software development, infrastructure, HIPAA/PCI compliance, security, strategy, and product planning. We had initial Product-Market Fit, great retention, but struggled with acquisition. Health care is hard.* Led a team to rapidly build out a HIPAA-compliant MVP (React/Typescript with Ruby on Rails). • Architected and implemented HIPAA/PCI compliant software platform, hosting infrastructure, and back office to meet Carol Health's startup-sized budget while complying with Spectrum Health's enterprise policies for security, auditing, and compliance.• Carol Health was awarded semi-finalist for Accelerate Michigan 2018 and featured innovator for 2018 Post-Acute 360 executive conference.Technical features included:* payment processing via Stripe* SMS integration via Twilio* analytics and daily reports* back-office tools* simple Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system with access control and auditing of patient health records

Recruited to help company convert core code base from Angular.js to React.js while maintaining feature parity.• Led all development of an enterprise iOS application. Interfaced with Microsoft Outlook, Exchange, and Active Directory to provide mobile company directory, calendar, and meeting scheduling. Created custom algorithm to provide best suggestions for available meeting times for attendees’ schedules.• Worked with team to successfully convert core code base from Angular.js to React.js and deploy it via a global CDN via Amazon Web Services resulting in 2x to 10x performance improvement.

Wrote a lot of backend code in Perl and some Node.js.
