Encompassing approaches and methods used in a wide range of disciplines, it offers Masters and PhD students studying any food-related subject in these HEIs the opportunity to participate in an exciting, interactive training programme designed to improve knowledge and understanding of the food system.IFSTAL has been developed in recognition of the urgent need to address increasing systemic failings in global and national food systems: about one billion people are hungry, two billion lack sufficient nutrients, and over two billion are overweight or obese. All three aspects have substantial negative impact on nutrition and health. Furthermore, current food system activities – from producing to consuming food (aka the ‘food chain’) – are significantly degrading the natural resources upon which food security depends.IFSTAL addresses the need to improve the full range of food system activities so as to enhance food security (i.e., access to, and utilisation of food, in addition to food availability) and reduce negative environmental impacts. Using a virtual learning environment (VLE) to link students with the complementary skills of the collaborating HEIs, it helps them enhance their specialist studies in the context of the broader food security-environment agenda. This, together with strengthening links with potential employers, equips students with the knowledge, skills and opportunities needed for them to be more effective in the workplace. My role as the Educational Coordinator at Reading is to provide content for the programme, manage the VLE and facilitate interaction between students at the University of Reading and those at the other HEIs. This required that notes be requested from third party health and care organisations, ordered, and prepared for review. An important aspect of this process was managing multiple concurrent information requests, ordering claims, and rigorous data management practices to ensure that no data was lost.Due to the high case load, customer service was an important aspect of the role, and involved the management of communication via telephone, email and written letter, in order to update claimants on the progress of their review and manage their expectations in the event of delays.I expanded my responsibilities by working closely with the Business Development Manager to improve organisational effectiveness in the team through a number of initiatives. These included critiquing and implementing alternative approaches to current organisational practices that may adversely impact on case throughput and departmental efficiency. I trained new staff members, cleaned up and migrated client records to a new data management system, and wrote a report to unify the team's data management activities. I also provided monthly figures to the Business Development Manager to meet the team's reporting requirements. Show less

A strong emphasis was put on developing a rapport with the tutee, acting as a mentor, encouraging independent thought and directing the focus of teaching to incorporate his interests. As the student was struggling with mathematics and had suspected learning difficulties, I carried out research into teaching in a more dyslexic friendly manner.
