Harley worked at IBM for 35 years, filling various consultant roles before passing on his seasoned knowledge of IT solutions, technology and business to DMD Data Systems, where he has been for the past 10 years. Some career-establishing steps that Harley made with IBM include: transferring the Kansas City Police Department alert system from Kansas City, Missouri to Louisville, Kentucky in the early 1980’s. At the time, this was the largest transfer of public domain code in IBM’s history. Harley was also instrumental in a consulting capacity for starting IBM’s consulting practice in government systems in Asia/Pacific in the 1990’s. A skill that Harley brought with him to DMD, is the ability to understand both the technical and business sides of technology, as well as the competency to integrate an infrastructure of automated applications into a company’s business model. One thing that gets him really excited is to take over and watch a project evolve from its conception until the actual roll out and execution of the model. In the 40+ years that he’s been in the technology industry, he still enjoys getting engaged in manual processes and seeing those migrated to electronic platforms.Based on the number of years that he’s been managing people and projects, something that differs Harley from other coworkers is the fact that he is a much better coach than manager. Having seen how work environments have changed, it’s clear to him that people in businesses don’t want authoritative management. They want people who encourage, excite and motivate good work. This coaching mentality is an operating principle that guides Harley’s work at DMD. Harley loves to fish, golf and spend time with his amazing grandkids.
