Fieldworker Ecology

Netherlands

Working as a flexteam-ecological-fieldworker, mainy specializing in bat research. This means i work on different projects for different durations of time:I was responsible for 11 residential area's where i made an inventory of the bat and swallow populations conform the dutch batprotocol (2017) in 2018 in the summer. This was done to determine where summer residences of bats where located as wel as maternity residences. All data was collected in a collector app.In 2019 i was responsible for 16 residential area's where i made an inventory of the bat and swallow populations conform the dutch batprotocol (2017) for the same reason as specified above. I also made fieldreports. Next to summer inventories i also performed early fall inventories. During these i looked at courtship behaviour to determine the bats residence, this was also reported in collector apps and fieldreports were made.

Professional Assignment/ Final Project Applied Biology

'S-Hertogenbosch, North Brabant, Netherlands

Title: Development and testing of a monitoring protocol to determine the ecological effects of Coypu in the pilot areas of LIFE MICAAbstract: Development and testing of a monitoring protocol to determine the ecological effects of Coypu in the pilot areas of LIFE MICA. LIFE MICA is a collaboration of multiple European countries: Belgium, Germany & the Netherlands. The main goal was to create a monitoring protocol for Reed vegetation, by using remote sensing, and monitoring protocols for bird, damsel- and dragonflies and vegetation surveys. These were created and tested in the Gelderse Poort, the Netherlands, and the output served as a first measurement. Monitoring has been done by surveying transects and permanent quadrants (PQs). Firstly, relevant vegetation, bird and damsel- and dragonfly species were selected, which can be (in)-directly influenced by Coypus. After species were selected relevant protocols of authorities in those fields were gathered and these were adjusted and made into a monitoring protocol for LIFE MICA. The results of the first measurement are interactively visualised in ArcGIS Dashboard and lay a basis for the monitoring nature of the LIFE MICA project. However, because of the time frame and season of this project, certain compromises were made and advice was given on how to improve the project in the upcoming years. Vegetation surveys and remote sensing need to be executed during the blooming period of the selected species. Monitoring needs to be done throughout the whole ecological season, and not just in the beginning, in order to qualitatively estimate populations of the selected species. The research needs be expanded by at least 2 months. The number of PQs and transects can be determined by a formula developed during this project. In order to do this and to make it manageable, formulas were constructed so that every pilot area of LIFE MICA can be monitored in the same way.

Testing which method is most effective for storing eDNA samples. The abstract is in dutch which can be found below. I was mostly responsible for leading the project, data-analysis in R and wiritng the paper.

Intern

Leiden

This internship was done at the European Invertebrate Survey (EIS) and the Radboud University (RU). See below for summary of the research i performed: Experiments where performed to determine its ecological effects of L. neglectus. To fill these gaps in knowledge hypothesis have been derived: (1) The diversity/density of invertebrates is lower inside L. neglectus territory compared to outside L. neglectus territory. (2) The scavenging pressure of L. neglectus is higher compared to L. niger. (3) The Sternorrhyncha density is higher when L. neglectus is present on Acer pseudoplatanus, compared to when they are not present. The present research was performed in the municipalities of Leiden, Rotterdam, Noordwijk and Wassenaar (all within the province of Zuid-Holland). The invertebrate density and diversity was measured using beating trays. The diversity was calculated using the Shannon-Weaver-Index. The scavenging pressure was measured using petri dishes with Drosophila melanogaster. The Sternorrhyncha density was measured by plucking leaves of A. pseudoplatanus, and the number of Sternorrhyncha were counted. This study did not find a decrease in diversity caused by L. neglectus which may be due to foraging patterns of Lasius species. However significant decrease of individual numbers of the order: Coleoptera, Gastropoda and Psocoptera were found, which may be caused by the vulnerable and slow juvenile stages that these groups have. Furthermore, a significant increase in Sternorrhyncha densities was found inside L. neglectus territory as well as a significant increase in scavenging pressure. The combination of these findings suggests that an increase in L. neglectus densities might cause a potential decrease in diversity.

Research project conducted in De Maashorst with a fellow student (Jeroen Gruijters) we researched the ant-biodiversity. We collected species from different nests and identified them. We also preformed GPS tracking to make a map of the found species and nests in ArcGiS. There was also a research conducted into the foraging behaviour of the ants with tube-falls.
