I sometimes refer to my position as 'overseer of the treasury'. You see, Statistics Netherlands has many treasures: all the data that we collect and receive about people, their jobs, their health, their businesses, cars, homes, families, income etc. Data that we use to create statistical output. Data that we want to keep safe, for future reference. Data that we want to re-use whenever possible. Data that is useless without metadata. So we develop innovative ways to make these data available and usable. For example by introducing data virtualization as a data abstraction layer, by building metadata tools so that the meaning of the data is clear.Retrieving information and thinking how best to present it has always formed an essential part of my work. As webmaster for a publishing agency, using web publishing tools. As statistical researcher, using statistical software such as SPSS to unveil valuable information hidden in large datasets. As coordinator of the Data Service Center, where I played an important role in defining our data and metadata management.
