Conventional injection molding requires nearly uniform wall thickness throughout the part. Gas-Assist makes it possible to mold parts with non-uniform wall thicknesses (i.e. thick and thin sections in the same part). During Gas-Assist molding, nitrogen gas is injected into the hot melt stream in the thick sections of the part once the plasticized resin has been injected into the mold. The nitrogen gas displaces resin in the center of the thick sections and the nitrogen is then vented out after the part has cooled but before the part is ejected from the mold.
