It offers skills training to both adults and young people, and partners with organisations to deliver outreach projects in the community. Designed by Turner Prize winning collective Assemble, it has become one of London's leading makerspaces. It was commissioned by Waltham Forest Council and co-funded by Create London, the GLA Outer London Fund, Legacy Trust UK and Arts Council England.I have been the project’s founding director since it opened, growing it to a self-supporting social enterprise. We have over 50 creative businesses based on site, with a membership of over 1000 users. I am responsible for developing the creative vision for the project and overseeing its smooth operation. This involves overseeing the projects legal governance, programming, health & safety compliance, delivery of the business plan, marketing strategy, setting up partnership initiatives, setting objectives for the team and working alongside the Financial Operations Director on the overall financial management. The workshop was nominated for ‘Best Led Community Project’ in London’s Planning Awards in 2016 and I received Waltham Forest Council’s ‘Special Leaders Award for Cultural Commitment in 2017’.I managed the delivery of a £250K capital project for new educational facilities and workspace on the site with a grant from the Mayor of London’s High Street Fund, and fundraised £40K for the purchase of 8 converted containers for new workspace supported by Big Issue Invest. In 2018 we partnered with developer U+I to build a pop up outdoor events space (£150K), with a giant marble run made from bus component parts. In 2019 we were commissioned by the London Borough of Culture, to deliver ATOMIC50 (£170K), creating a tin-working factory, teaching metalwork skills to 7-11 year olds through an immersive set and performance.
