About Harrison Mauseth
The thrill I get when my code comes to life is undeniable. I spent my youth taking apart VCRs, remotes, and other household electronics. My hope was by seeing the circuitry I could just figure out how all the components work. It felt like magic to me, and I wanted become the benevolent wizard who shares his wonders with the world. The desire to create has never faded. In high school, I took every photography class available. I bought every instrument I could afford and taught myself how to play music so I could join a band. When I made the observation that the local music scene had a lack of innovative lighting designers, I sold all of my instruments to buy lighting equipment. Coincidentally, that was my first taste of coding. And I was hooked. The unfortunate side of pursuing an artistic career is that the work can be inconsistent. I spent the better part of five years trying to make lighting design a full time career. Eventually, I decided to take a calculated risk. I set aside enough money to quit serving tables, move to Omaha, and take a few months to try to land a job with a nationally touring staging company. Instead, I ended up with the backup plan: I got a stable job with consistent hours and set a new goal of pursuing a career in software development. It turns out that the universe works in mysterious ways. I had some health issues arise about a year into the job and the pandemic followed shortly thereafter. Not only was I able to take the time I needed to recover, business was booming and job security was never a concern when everything else felt so uncertain. I transitioned into a remote role with flexible hours and have greatly benefited from the quality of life improvements it has made. Within my first month in this position, I discovered that one of our reports required about four hours of unnecessary rework. I took it upon myself to learn enough VBA over a weekend to write a macro that eliminated this entirely. I quickly became the go-to guy for optimizing our processes and loved every second of it. Enrolling in the full-stack Java bootcamp through Tech Elevator has been exactly what I had hoped it would be. I'm surrounded by like-minded individuals who share my passion for creativity. My goal in this career change is not too far off from that childhood dream. I want to work for a company who works towards making the world a better place, encourages my growth as a developer, and would love to eventually lead a team to success.Feel free to send me a message if you want to chat!
