About Harry Abels

During his studies Harry got fascinated by the dynamics of cities and the corresponding scenography of buildings and its issues of form and function. Through his Delft professor Smook he became acquainted with the ‘art direction’ of villages and cities. This method is profoundly and beautifully depicted by the Town Scapes of Gordon Cullen, in whose office Harry was employed for a while. After finishing his studies Harry realised his first buildings at architectural office Hans Witt in Amsterdam, including renovations, large residential buildings, hotels, shops and a large office building. Besides architecture Harry gets inspired by fine arts and literature. Sculpture is of main importance for his thinking. The very wide frames of the fine arts do apply for architecture as well: one should always approach the assignment in its broadest sense. Try to answer the question in an authentic manner and do not imitate some fancy style. By doing so, the architect composes an hypothesis, which leads ‘from nothing to something’. In this classical fashion the architect speaks on behalf of the initiative, meanwhile striving to appeal to the very essence of the question.
