About Harry Akerman

I am a full time consultant anaesthetist in the NHS who specialises in regional anaesthesia. My interests are in outcomes in medicine as I firmly believe that we need to know more about the outcomes from a patient's perspective relating to the interventions that we do on patients. I have therefore developed iPROMS with RioMed (health software company) to collect patient feedback and have developed various other educational and medical platforms. I am a cofounder of Alloc8tor, a software platform linking together surgeons in the private sector who need an anaesthetist, with anaesthetists who are both capable of doing the work and with admitting rights in the relevant hospitals. I am also a Visiting Professor at the University of Southampton where we are developing a novel cheap, small, continuous, non-invasive respiratory rate monitor and have just been awarded just shy of £1M by NIHR

    I am currently working with the Electronic engineering department at Southampton University to develop a Capaciflector which we intend to use as a remote respiratory rate monitor to enable us to get continuous readings of this important physiological sign which is often an early marker of a deteriorating patient. Early notification of worsening physiology can enable prompt effective treatment before the patient has deteriorated thus reducing their morbidity.

    Alloc8tor (www.alloc8tor.co.uk) is a software programme that links together those that have work to give out with those looking for work. Initially focusing on the healthcare industry we have specific solutions for private anaesthetic groups to help cover lists, and for hospitals to help reduce their agency spend. Filters ensure the workers are only notified of work that is relevant to them, whilst the admin can see the individual responses of each of those asked. Automated emails keep all relevant people informed throughout the whole process. We have recently gone live with our 'Alloc8tor London' project where we are putting together a 'Pan London Virtual Anaesthetic Group' to facilitate the process of finding anaesthetists for surgical secretaries across all of London's private hospitals.
