The particular sector of Swindon Borough Council (SBC) I am working in is the Community Health and Wellbeing Team. This team aims to improve the physical and mental wellbeing of people in the Borough of Swindon using sport and physical activity. They provide a range of projects aimed at improving the lives of a variety of groups. These groups include people with learning and physical disabilities, disadvantaged young people, people with obesity and many more. My role within the team has been to coordinate the ‘Special Olympics’ (SO) programme in Swindon. The SO is a worldwide movement which aims to get more people, aged 8+, with learning disabilities involved in sport. This can be at a participatory level and then possibly lead to a higher level by giving them the chance to compete at a local, regional, national or even international level. As an SBC project, SO Swindon was accredited as an official club by Special Olympics Great Britain (SOGB) in May 2015. My placement as project coordinator has included the following responsibilities:• Being the main contact and chairing the SO steering group• Overseeing all training sessions and setting up new sessions for different sports• Organising and planning competitions and taking teams to competitions in other areas of the country• Controlling the budget for the project, monitoring income and expenses and keeping a record of these• Reporting back to funders on what their contributions have been spent on and why• Coaching in a variety of sports sessions
