About Harry Hebert
Harry Hebert is a non-clinical Principal Investigator (Tenure Track), based in the School of Medicine at the University of Dundee. He was appointed to this post in June 2024. His current research focuses on the pharmacoepidemiology of chronic (neuropathic) pain including prevalence and predictors of analgesic use, treatment response and adverse outcomes. One of his career goals is to improve the lives of people living with chronic pain, by ensuring that clinical guidelines and practice are informed by relevant research. Prior to his current post, Harry worked for 8 years as a postdoctoral researcher with Professors Blair H Smith and Lesley Colvin on the DOLORisk and PAINSTORM studies respectively, building clinical risk models for neuropathic pain. Harry holds a PhD in Genetic Epidemiology from the University of Manchester, an MSc in Human Molecular Genetics from Imperial College London and a BSc(Hons) in Genetics from the University of Nottingham.
Listed skills include Genetics, Genotyping, Psoriasis, Psoriatic Arthritis, and 11 others.

Principal Investigator (Tenure Track)
Postdoctoral Research Assistant
I am currently working on a Health Data Research UK (HDR UK) funded project investigating the genetics of opioid prescribing outcomes in three Scottish population cohorts (GoDARTS, Generation Scotland and GoSHARE). This involves linking electronic medical records, particularly longitudinal prescribing data to genome-wide SNP genotype data for all three cohorts and performing association studies between genetic variants (including SNPs in the drug metabolizing gene CYP2D6) and drug cessation (such as codeine). Previously I worked on a project titled “The Perioperative Management of Patients with Covid-19”, For this, I conducted a rapid systematic review of the literature. Concurrently, I worked on a Research Excellence Framework (REF) Impact Case Study investigating the influence of a Scottish Intercollegiate Guideline Network (SIGN) publication for the management of chronic pain (SIGN 136) on opioid prescribing rates in Scotland (led by Professors Blair Smith and Lesley Colvin). To achieve this objective, I used an interrupted time series analysis approach to analyse the association of SIGN 136 with change in prescribing rates for 29 opioid-containing drugs across Scotland. From 2015-2020 I was the project coordinator for Work Package 7 of the DOLORisk study (DOLORisk Dundee), led by Professor Blair Smith, Professor Colin Palmer and Dr Weihua Meng. DOLORisk is a multicentre study, consisting of expert researchers from 9 European countries with the aim of understanding risk factors and determinants for neuropathic pain. I managed the day-to-day activities of DOLORisk Dundee. This involved coordinating the mailing of questionnaires to participants of GoDARTS and Generation Scotland, receiving and analysing data to build environmental risk models to predict neuropathic pain onset and resolution and liaising with collaborators to meet the project deliverables.
Research Associate
I collected age of onset data for psoriasis patients from the WTCCC cohort and conducted a genome-wide analysis using age of onset as a quantitative trait. I also worked on a candidate-gene association study of TLR4 in psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis, contributing to data acquisition, analysis and final manuscript production. Finally I helped genotype around 1000 psoriatic arthritis samples for a GWAS study, whilst assisting the training of a new PhD student.
Ph.D. Student
The objective of the project was achieved in identifying genetic loci associated with late-onset psoriasis and in exploring the overlap with early-onset psoriasis. Associated loci were further explored through functional techniques to find out how they contribute to disease pathogenesis with the objective of contributing to a body of knowledge that will eventually lead to tailored diagnosis and therapy.
M.Sc. Student
Achieved sixth months of teaching and research based projects respectively. The teaching focused students around modules on analysing complex and monogenic diseases, clinical genetics, cytogenetics, genetic counselling, statistical genetics and quantitative genetics. The research project was conducted through my own initiative and achieved its aim to investigate the effect of a promoter SNP on the expression of the drug metabolising gene FMO1.
B.Sc. Student
Final year modules covered DNA repair, cancer genetics, medical genetics, population genetics, gene regulation and human variation. The final year project involved the investigation of conserved function of chromosomal centromeres in fission yeast, despite differences in DNA sequence.
