About Harry Laing

As Energy Data and Optimisation Lead for Northumbrian Water (NWG), I am responsible for the consolidation, verification and analysis for the energy data across the business, aiming to provide accurate insights into optimisation opportunities around energy use. My PhD investigated optimisation, control and modelling opportunities at a major Wastewater Treatment plant in the Northeast of England, my previous role as a KTP Associate turned some of my PhD models into a usable tool for NWG. My undergraduate degree was also at Newcastle University, where I have Honours in Process Control based Chemical Engineering.

Harry Laing Work Experience Details
  • Nwg (Northumbrian Water Group)
    Energy Data And Optimisation Lead
Nwg (Northumbrian Water Group) Aug 2024 - Present
    Durham, England, United Kingdom
Responsible for the consolidation, cleaning, verification and analysis of Energy Data across the business. Using advanced modelling capabilities, forecasting tools and analysis techniques we can gain improved insights into our energy use that can be used to identify and validate opportunities for optimisation, such as improved operating schedules, making use of new technology or upgrading to more efficient assets (to name but a few).
  • Newcastle University
    Ktp Associate
    Newcastle University Jan 2022 - Aug 2024
Newcastle Upon Tyne, England, United Kingdom
Working in partnership with Northumbrian Water Ltd (NWL), the KTP (Knowledge Transfer Partnership) aims to take my PhD research and embed the outcomes and knowledge within NWL systems. The primary goal is to integrate the Energy Management optimisation tool that was developed as part of the PhD for the Advanced Anaerobic Digestion plant for NWL's large wastewater treatment site on Tyneside. The model uses a novel MILP (Mixed Integer Linear Programming) approach to optimise site operations whilst considering varying energy costs, demands and renewable biogas production on site. Secondary to this objective, the KTP project will improve some of the other models developed throughout the PhD (such as a biogas prediction model). Additionally, the KTP will see the application of the PhD research to other sites within the business, with potential scope for application elsewhere.
  • Newcastle University
    Doctor Of Philosophy (Phd)
    Newcastle University Sep 2017 - Jan 2022
Newcastle Upon Tyne, England, United Kingdom
Working alongside Northumbrian Water, I investigated optimisation, control and data driven modelling opportunities at a large advanced wastewater treatment works in the Tyneside area. Such treatment sites have high energy demands, but also produce high volumes of renewable biogas as a by-product of the treatment process. The PhD project delivered an optimisation model to energy usage and gas distribution on site, including new legislation into carbon emissions to aid in the water sector's 2030 carbon neutrality pledge. Presented here is a list of the major contributions to the scientific and academic community as a result of this PhD:• Article Published in the 200th Edition of the Institute of Water’s magazine (https://issuu.com/instituteofwater/docs/1118_iow_magazine_q4_interactive_v2}• Wastewater Network Conference Winner of Best Poster (Nov 2018) (https://www.ncl.ac.uk/media/wwwnclacuk/engineering/files/stream/wastewater-network-conference-2018-harry-laing-poster-competion-winner.pdf)• ECCE12 conference in Florence Poster (Sept 2019)• ICHemE Advances in Process Automation and Control Conference in Manchester Poster (Nov 2019)• STREAM Annual Conference Poster (Jul 2019)• Process Intensification Network (PIN) Conference Poster (Jun 2019)• Research Paper (Published): “Development of a Biogas Distribution Model for a Wastewater Treatment Plant: A Mixed Integer Linear Programming Approach” published with Institute of Water’s ‘Water Science and Technology’ research journal. (Jun 2020) (https://doi.org/10.2166/wst.2020.363)• Research Paper (Under Review): “An energy and carbon management model for an Advanced Anaerobic Digestion plant”, currently under review with the research journal “Energy” (Jun 2021). • IChemE Advances in Process Automation and Control Conference (Virtual) Presentation - "Optimising Energy and Carbon management for an AAD plant at Northumbrian Water using Mixed Integer Linear Programming ". (Oct 2021)
