My focus is Senator Murphy's work to address the ways in which Americans feel alienated from society, with an approach to policy and politics that is grounded in restoring healthy communities, social connection, and concern for the common good. I report to the Chief of Staff and collaborate across teams to advance new strategies for policy, coalition building, media, and outreach.We launched a national dialogue series with Sen. Murphy and Gov. Spencer Cox (R-UT) on Restoring the Common Good, which was the subject of a Washington Post column by E.J. Dionne and a joint interview on Fox News with Bret Baier.We have an ongoing series of social media lives to highlight how the Biden-Harris Administration is using antitrust policy to empower consumers, small businesses, and local communities. The series was profiled in the American Prospect, and Sen. Murphy delivered a keynote address at an anti-monopoly conference organized by the American Economic Liberties Project.We are developing new policy initiatives across a range of issues as part of a broader economic agenda focused on helping people live a good life, and working with a wide range of organizations and leaders to build a large and diverse political coalition around this approach.

I advised Senator Van Hollen on tax, budget, labor, federal employment, and postal issues. I staffed Sen. Van Hollen for the Senate Budget Committee, and for issues within my portfolio in the Senate Appropriations Committee and the Senate Banking Committee.We developed an economic agenda to create jobs, raise wages, and reduce inequality, with original legislation such as the Employee Equity Investment Act, Long-Term Unemployment Elimination Act, the Disclosure of Tax Havens and Offshoring Act, the Millionaires Surtax Act, the Sensible Taxation and Equity Promotion Act, and the Strengthen Social Security by Taxing Dynastic Wealth Act.We built a bipartisan and bicameral coalition to eliminate the lifetime ban on students with felony drug convictions claiming the American Opportunity Tax Credit, which is the most generous tax benefit for higher education, with the ED ACCESS Act.We obtained an GAO finding that withholding security assistance for Ukraine was an illegal violation of the Impoundment Control Act, which was cited extensively during the impeachment trial of President Trump. We successfully pushed USAID to stop requiring salary history data from contractors, which can perpetuate discriminatory pay practices, after constituents brought this issue to our attention. We also worked with Sen. Lee to stop a rule that would have required applicants for federal jobs to divulge participation in a pretrial diversion program, which would have expanded barriers to hiring people with past involvement in the justice system.

I directed the Center's work on fiscal issues, analyzing the tax and spending choices within the federal budget. My reports covered topics such as appropriations, taxes, public investment, deficits, and budget process. I frequently spoke on-the-record about tax and budget policy, appearing on radio and television stations such as MSNBC, CNBC, and BBC World Service, and publishing opinion pieces in outlets such as Reuters, The Guardian, and Roll Call. My work has been cited by publications including The Washington Post, The Atlantic, and The New Yorker, and I has been quoted in The Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, Politico, and many other major news sources.

I advised Senator Herb Kohl on defense, foreign affairs, taxes, veterans, budget, and Indian affairs issues. This included speechwriting, vote recommendations, drafting original legislation, and negotiation with Congressional offices and committees. With a broad portfolio of complex issues, I had to effectively research new topics and ask the right questions of the high-level stakeholders who met with me to argue their case. At the same time, I concisely briefed a busy U.S. Senator and communicated with a broader audience of non-experts.My accomplishments include shepherding legislation from start to finish to fix mistakes that caused hundreds of soldiers to be denied benefits they earned for their service overseas, and permanently extending the tax credit for employer-provided child care. In the Appropriations Committee, I led our office's effort to support priorities such as the Littoral Combat Ship, and wrote provisions to improve procedures used by the government to purchase batteries.

I wrote letters responding to constituent concerns about banking, housing, taxes, and insurance. As correspondence manager, I was responsible for guiding our team of legislative correspondents on how to best respond to constituent letters.In this position, I gained valuable experience working closely with the legislative assistant for banking and housing, and eventually took full responsibility for advising Senator Kohl on Dodd/Frank financial reform legislation during a period of staff turnover. My success in this role led to my promotion to legislative assistant.

I started my career in Senator Kohl's office at our front desk, building customer service skills by speaking with constituents calling about legislation, and ensuring that people visiting the office were treated professionally. I also wrote some legislative correspondence and assisted legislative staff with research and writing projects. My success in this role led to my promotion to legislative correspondent.
