At Trelleborg Offshore UK (TOUK) I am a lead design engineer with a focus on the design and development of bespoke plastic and composite components for use in the offshore oil and gas industry. I spent the first year and a half of my career with TOUK working within the Cable and Flowline department. Here my focus was on high volume orders of Polyurethane products. This gave me experience in optimising designs to be as cost efficient as possible by minimising material volumes and simplifying tool design. I gained a large amount of experience in interpreting customer specifications and ensuring that the product met all requirements.I was involved in all stages of the products life cycle from bidding phase where I designed and modelled our solution in Autodesk Inventor, a 3D CAD package, production where I oversaw quality issues and factory acceptance tests, and post-delivery support where I produced design reports, test reports, and installation and handling guides. As a design engineer I am constantly looking to develop improvements in our products. This has included testing alternative antifoul products and successfully introducing a 75% cost reduction in Trelleborg’s strapping solution. More recently I have moved to the Buoyancy department after being headhunted internally following a successful collaboration project. I jumped at the opportunity to further test myself with new technical challenges.

At MST I progressed into a lead role as a mechanical design engineer in the design and development of high speed rigid inflatable boats for both commercial and military use. In this role I was the technical authority at all stages of design including sales bids, new craft design, and upgrading and maintaining existing craft. This experience provided me with an excellent and well-rounded understanding of all production vessels, allowing me to effectively represent the company externally at international shows and with MoD project officials. I designed all aspects of the vessels using Solidworks, a 3D CAD software package. This included craft fuel systems, ergonomic design of console fascia arrangements, and engine and drive installation detail, all based on sales briefings and technical specifications, as well as commercial requirements. Throughout the lifecycle of projects I would collaborate with the Naval Architect to ensure that the craft will meet all ISO standards and MCA codes. I was the first point of contact for fabricators and component suppliers, and when a component arrives on site I am the final authority to give quality checks and approve it fit for use. I completed FEA stress analysis to critical components, and provide instruction for the component to be certified to a safe working load. I produced detailed 2D CAD drawings for both external fabrication and for internal assembly instructions. I provided technical guidance to the production team throughout the build of the craft, and coordinate their work based on component lead times, and project deadlines. Within my engineering team I delegate assignments, approve design concepts and drawings.

I spent a year outside of my course at university to complete a year in industry with Selex ES. Whilst at Selex I worked alongside the Systems Engineer manager and investigated into preventative maintenance methods and benefits. I also worked extensively with the mechanical engineering department n their optical systems, which is what inspired me to complete my Masters project on Laser Optics at university, as well as giving me the passion to pursue a career in Mechanical Design. As an extra project I spent a few months with the sales department, working on importing Selex's products into a virtual reality for customer and user interaction.
