This wholesaler manufactures frozen bakery products for sale at in-store bakeries primarily in the Midwest and Northeast, and for many years also at most Walmarts with bakeries. I invested in the firm and joined its board of directors in 1987, remaining until its sale in 2005. I managed the sale of the property several years later. While on the board I designed then implemented a new all-department management information , enterprise resource/planning CRM system with an added goal of satisfying the perspective of shareholders and board members. Early versions of the system began in 1989, the final company wide all-staff deployment started around 1998 system was in continuous use until 2020 -- surviving two changes in company ownership. Specifically, while supporting the staffing, ordering, marketing, sales and shipping aspects of the business, and using only the productivity and forecasting decisions of the staff: the system produced a pro-forma income statement which tied in to the accounting system. The objective, which we attained, was to use the difference report in the management vs. actuarial accounting system to determine opportunities and validate departmental assumptions, productivity, standards and practices.It is one of my proudest accomplishments that even after the sale of the company, twice over the following 10 years: Though the underlying hardware has grown, my MIS system remained the core operating platform of the company until 2020). From its modest beginnings supporting about 25 staff, It now supports roughly 200. At the request of investment bankers in this publicly traded company, and later with the support of management, I served on its board of directors. My function was to offer technology advice and keep the investment bankers abreast of developments.

As a favor to the owner, while working elsewhere as noted I did due diligence / pre-investment consulting for this investment banking firm. Spending up to a week at a time visiting firms seeking post-startup 'one step before IPO' investment, I wrote technology capability / product readiness / marketing appropriateness assessments, as well as time-to-market estimates. Most often I was asked to translate/explain highly technical efforts to 'educated, but non-technical English' and provide candid 'go / no go' thoughts and reasons.

My first startup. Initially developing software for UPI, UPI filed for Chapter 11 in 1984. Notable internally developed products followed: "The Polling Poll", computer based kiosks deployed for opinion research by Newsweek On Campus, not only the computer hardware/physical kiosk, but all the software to support an internal team doing the graphics and user interface for the survey designs. AKG Staff managed deployment to university campus locations around the country, and the statistical analysis of results submitted to the Newsweek contracted public opinion survey group."The Knowledge Network": a very early low speed small business computer networking hardware/software combination suitable for printer and file sharing, known for low cost and simple 'no tools' installation. Merged a pair of early servers and a dozen or so terminals with software I designed from the ground up into an integrated classified advertising system supporting online order taking and design, daily publishing and billing operations.
