About Harry A. Layman, Phd

I am a senior technology advisor, builder, and solution architect with a broad range of skills and interests. I have previously held CTO, and VP of Engineering roles and led data science and AI initiatives across large (Dell Technologies) and small enterprises -- most recently at ThinkCERCA, and previously at three other venture-funded enterprises (including LifeMinders (which rapidly grew into a public company as a pioneer of personalized e-commerce) and Juice Software (acquired by ProClarity). Over the last 15 years, I have focused on semantic technologies for understanding text, including predictive analytics, machine learning, and (most recently) generative AI, and applied these technologies to challenges in recruiting, workplace assessment, compliance, academic assessment, personalized learning, automated feedback for critical thinking and performance tasks, training, and other text and speech-related applications. My professional interests are focused on leveraging emerging semantic technologies to drive significant improvements in business, healthcare, and education outcomes across all levels. During my doctoral studies (concluded at the University of Leicester in 2021), I conducted published research and developed advanced tools for automating feedback in formative assessment. I maintain an active interest in computational psychometrics, particularly its applications in personalized learning and enhancing student outcomes. With over four decades of experience, I have developed and implemented innovative solutions utilizing a range of advanced technologies and tools, including statistical analysis, natural language processing, predictive analytics, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. This extensive experience, combined with my multidisciplinary education, allows me to approach complex problems with a unique and comprehensive perspective. My recent experience creating award-winning EdTech solutions leveraging GenAI and Machine Learning. My current work focuses on enterprise technology, cloud-based solutions, and aI-enabled “smart” applications that scale. I continue to research itext scoring, second language acquisition, assessment automation and learning analytics. I also have extensive experience as a technology leader, advisor, strategist, solution architect, and problem solver, having directed global teams in the USA, China, India, and Mexico, and managed IT services in Hangzhou for US and EU customers. I have previous certifications in AWS cloud and ML/AI solutions, as well as prior CISA, CISSP, PMP, and Scrum certifications.
