I volunteered in an orphanage just outside of Nairobi, Kenya. For the first two months of my stay I was working on the farm that was donated to the orphanage, and also labouring work, as we were building a wall around the home for security purposes. When I expressed my interest in teaching and the experience I’ve had in the field, I was offered a position in the local school, Shalom Academy educating children aged 6 to 15 in English language and English literature. I’d also regularly sell the fruit and vegetables that were grown on our farm, at the local market. Volunteering in a third world country and helping those less fortunate than myself has always been a dream of mine to fulfil. I had an experience that was truly life-changing. I gained a lot of knowledge on different cultures, children’s characteristics and many more invaluable lessons.

I was hired as an apprentice for Rathbone, the first apprentice they had ever hired in the history of the company, Rathbone is a government funded organisation that works alongside young offenders, young people with major behavioural issues also youths aged 11 – 16 who have been excluded from school or those who are at risk of exclusion from school. Initially my duties were observing the work of my colleagues, which was teaching key skills such as literacy and numeracy in the classrooms in our youth centre.We also did considerable amounts of‘outreach’ work which would involve travelling to target areas around Manchester to visit young people either at their homes, or where they might be at the time with their friends. When approaching the target young people we would talk to them about their future and their possible options going forward, we had the resources to assist them with employment possibilities, college course, apprenticeships etc. We also ran a number of youth centres which enabled those expelled or detached from their schools to learn in a centre and gain their key skills which improves their chances of employment and higher education. Our main concern were NEETs which is a government acronym used for people not in employment, education or training.

Initially I started working at Lindow Primary on a placement whilst studying Health and Social Care at Macclesfield College, after the placement finished, I was offered a position working five days a week, as they were more than appreciative of my contribution to the school and children and my attitude towards work. Working at the school gained me vital skills in punctuality, as I would never miss a working day nor be late at any time. I learned the importance of appearance, as I quickly realised I was a role model to the children and looking and behaving in a professional manner was a necessity. Equality and diversity is a key subject I learnt in my studies and also something I had to put into practice when working at the school, as it is vital treat all children equally. My duties at Lindow Primary was mainly working with the ‘challenging’ children, including children that were hard of hearing, or facing language barriers, learning difficulties, and behavioural issues. I was assigned to mentor these particular children on a daily basis as it was clear I had a positive impact on their behaviour and work.
